ME3000 – Design of Machine Elements
Assignment –1
Assume suitably if any data found missing.
1. A part is under the combined loading of bending, axial and torsion generating the following in
phase stresses at a point –
Bending: Completely reversed with maximum stress of 60 MPa
Axial: Constant stress of 20 MPa
Torsion: Repeated load, varying from 0 to 50 MPa
A notch is present in the part such that Kf,bending = 1.4, Kf,axial = 1.1, and Kf,torsion = 2.0. The
material properties are Sy = 300 MPa, and Su = 400 MPa. The endurance limit (after adjusting
completely) is Se = 200 MPa. Calculate the factor of safety for fatigue based on infinite life. If
the life is not infinite, estimate the number of cycles to failure.
2. Repeat the above problem with the following loading conditions –
Bending: Fluctuating stress from (– 40 MPa) to (150 MPa)
Axial: None
Torsion: Mean stress of 90 MPa, with an alternating stress of 10% of mean stress
3. Cast iron when tested in tension and compression has an ultimate strength of (σult)t = 280 MPa
and (σult)c = 420 MPa respectively. Also, when subjected to pure torsion it can sustain an
ultimate shear stress of τult = 168 MPa. Plot the Mohr’s circles for each case and establish the
failure envelope. If a part made of this material is subjected to the state of plane stress shown
in Fig. 1, determine if it fails according to Mohr’s failure criterion.

4. A rotating shaft is shown in Fig. 2. It is subjected to a force F = 6 kN. Find the minimum factor
of safety for fatigue based on infinite life. If the life is not infinite, estimate the number of
cycles to failure. (All the dimensions are in mm)

5. A steel pipe of outer diameter 30 mm and inner diameter 20 mm is subjected to the loading
sown in Fig. 3. Calculate the factor of safety against yielding at point A according to Von Mises
failure theory.

6. A round shaft is subjected to a bending moment of 15 N-m as shown in Fig.4. The stress
concentration factor at the fillet is 1.5 and Sut = 200 MPa. Determine the diameter d, stress at
the fillet and the factor of safety. (All dimensions are in mm)

7. An aluminium drive shaft is used to transmit 25 HP at 1500 rev/min. Using a factor of safety
of 2.5, determine the smallest diameter shaft that can be used based on maximum distortion
energy theory. Sy = 120 MPa.
8. A steel cantilever beam with Sut = 540 MPa and Sy = 320 MPa is subjected to a fully reversed
load P = 5 kN. This is shown in Fig. 5. The beam is machined and the reliability factor is 50%,
factor of safety 2 and notch sensitivity 0.9. Determine i) The endurance limit at the fillet
section, ii) diameter d of the beam for infinite life. (All dimensions are in mm)
