RMON – remote network monitoring;
Remote network monitoring (RMON) protocol -RMON is was developed as Simple Network
Management Protocol (SNMP) model use of hosts and routers in the process of gathering netowork
information, limited the amount of information that could be gathered as these hosts and routers
already have their roles as hosts and routers,
RMON, a management information base module(MIB), is said to be a part of SNMP
As RMON is an mib module it consists of descriptions for MIB objects
RMON allows for more comprehensive monitoring of the Ethernet network. Remote traffic monitoring
can be done using RMON. Unlike with a standard MIB where information is only received by an
administrator after it is requested, if RMON is utilized software and/or network devices can be used to
present capture and record information.

_ Remote network monitoring (RMON) is the process of monitoring network traffic on a remote
Ethernet segment to detect network issues such as dropped packets, network collisions and traffic
congestion. One of the most successful network management protocols, RMON was originally
developed by the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF), an open organization made up of network
designers, operators, vendors and researchers, that develops and promotes voluntary Internet
standards. _ [not paraphrased]
Developed specifically to help network administrators remotely monitor and analyze data that is
collected from local area networks, RMON allows for the collection of network data from LANs without
having to reach the site and set up equipment.
With RMON, you can set performance thresholds and generate alerts when the threshold is breached,
allowing for proactive network management.
RMON provides 9 groups of monitoring elements which allow the capture of network informations
there are 2 rmon specifications rmon 1 and rmon 2. rmon 2 is an extension of rmon 1

The RMON MIB requires two components; a remote collection agent and a manager application for the
display of gathered information. RMON requires a considerable amount of computation power unlike
other SNMP agents which are designed for simple devices.
