UNDERSTANDING COHESION IN
WRITING
“Cohesion” refers to the degree to which sentences
are connected so that the flow of ideas is easy to
follow. It is the interconnection of two different
sentences and how they are related to each other.
Good cohesion leads to good coherence, which is
the ultimate aim of sensible writing.
USING COHESIVE DEVICES TO
CREATE COHESION
• Cohesive devices are certain words or phrases that
serve the purpose of connecting two statements,
usually by referring back to what you have
previously said.
• These devices indicate the relationships that exist
among different ideas.
• They usually appear at the beginning of the
sentence, allowing the reader to establish the link
with the previous idea before moving to the next one.
EXAMPLES OF COHESIVE DEVICES
1. Additionally, in addition to, moreover, etc. (In case of
addition)
2. For this reason (In case of cause-effect)
3. Furthermore (In case of elaboration)
4. Compared to (In case of comparison)
5. On the contrary, on the other hand, etc. (In case of
contrast)
6. At the same time, meanwhile, etc. (In case of time
transitions)
7. In other words (In case of restatement)
HOW TO MAKE YOUR WRITING
COHESIVE
1. Use correct punctuation marks throughout the body of
writing.
2. Use clear language and avoid ambiguous words.
3. Vary your sentence lengths and structures.
4. To avoid repetition of the same word, use synonyms.
5. Use cohesive devices, especially linkers (in addition to this,
to my mind, etc.)
6. Use pronouns (this, that, it, they, etc.) to avoid repetition of
nouns.
EXAMPLE :
Children are very playful. Children love playing games
with their friends. Children also love watching movies.
This passage can be made more cohesive in the
following manner:
Children are very playful and they love playing games
with their friends. They also love watching movies.
