Safe Scaffolding Dismantling & Reinstallation (OSHA Standard)

1. Introduction

Scaffolding must be erected, used, and dismantled following OSHA standards (29 CFR 1926 Subpart L).

Safe practices prevent falls, collapses, and other jobsite incidents.

2. Scaffolding Dismantling Safety Requirements

- Ensure a competent person inspects the scaffold before dismantling.

- Clearly tag scaffolding as 'Do Not Use' before dismantling.

- All personnel must wear fall protection: full body harness + lanyard.

- Remove components systematically from top to bottom.

- Use taglines and barricades to control dropped materials.

- Only trained and authorized workers should perform dismantling.

3. Scaffold Reinstallation Guidelines

- Begin with stable mudsill and base plates.

- Ensure vertical posts are plumb and properly braced.

- Install all guardrails, midrails, and toeboards.

- Working platforms must be fully planked (minimum 18" wide).

- Provide safe access via ladders or stair towers.

- Secure all connections using locking pins and cross braces.

4. Key OSHA Safety Provisions

- Scaffold must support 4 times the intended load.

- Height to base ratio should not exceed 4:1 unless tied.

- Platforms must extend over supports by at least 6 inches.

- Daily pre-use inspection is mandatory.

- Avoid work during high winds, lightning, or rain.
