A manufacturer wants to make an open box (i.e. a box with no lid) with a square base and
volume 4 m 3 . The sides are perpendicular to the base which measures x x metres.

SECTION B: FINANCE AND ANALYTICA GEOMETRY (41 marks; 40 minutes)
QUESTION 7
7.1 A photocopier valued at R24 000 depreciates at a rate of 18% p.a. on the reducing- (4)
balance method. After how many years will its value be R15 000?
7.2 Mrs Campbel invested R10 050 on 1 January 2020 in an account that paid interest at (4)
the rate of x % p.a., compounded quarterly. The accumulated amount in the account
on 1 January 2024 was R13 867. Calculate the value of x.
7.3 Mr Mbuyisa invested R50 000 in a savings account for 7 years. The investment
earned interest at the rate of 14% p.a., compounded monthly for the first three years.
The rate of interest changed to 13% p.a., compounded half-yearly, for the remaining
four years. Mr Mbuyisa withdrew R6 032 from the account 5 years after making the
initial deposit.
7.3.1 Calculate the accumulated amount in the account three years after (3)
making the initial deposit.
7.3.2 Calculate the accumulated amount in the savings account at the end of (4)
