Strategic Approach. Cengage Publishing (7th Edition). Ebook available from Bookstore.
DESCRIPTION
This course is titled "International Management" and, as such, covers most of the issues
related to the management of multinationals. The course is conveniently divided into
four major components:
1) basic understanding of how cultures are different across nations
2) multinational strategic management issues
3) multinational organizational design issues
and 4) multinational organizational behavior issues.
We will cover material that will give you a good understanding of how the concepts in
component 1 above apply to components 2, 3, & 4.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
By the end of the course, I hope that you will be able
1. To understand some of the factors making globalization a reality
2. To understand and apply some of the national culture and social institution models
and frameworks to understand how national cultures differ
3. To be able to understand how national culture differences affect the strategic
management, organization design, and organizational behavior aspects of multinational
management
4. To understand the application of such theories to practical situations through cases
analyses etc.
5. To get a better understanding of the environment facing today’s multinational
manager
GRADING CRITERIA
Quizzes (4 at 9.5% each) 38
Discussion (5 sessions at 6%) 30
Individual cases (4 out of 5 @8%) 32
Quizzes:
There are FOUR quizzes (each worth 9.5%; 4X9.5% = 38%) scheduled for this
course. Each quiz will cover selected chapters as noted in the syllabus. The quiz
will test your knowledge of lecture/text material using multiple-choice
questions. Quizzes can only be taken on scheduled dates. You will be required
to respond to 33 questions. To eliminate any ‘bad’ or ambiguous questions, your
score will be based on 30 questions.
Individual Cases:
There are 5 cases listed on the syllabus. You are responsible for preparing
FOUR (each worth 8%; 4 cases @ 8% = 32%) of these cases. You have to
answer the question in FOUR PAGES double-spaced; papers over the page limit
are not acceptable. Your answers will be judged on the basis of: (a) the clarity
and cogency of your writing, (b) the degree to which you actually complete the
questions, (c) the creativity and insight you demonstrate in analyzing the
questions and in generating possible solutions whenever applicable, (d) the
degree to which you are able to identify and counteract potential problems with
your suggested solutions and (e) the degree to which you demonstrate mastery
and understanding of the material covered in the class. Each of the above five
parts will be worth 20% of your score on the case. You, therefore, need to make
sure that all issues are covered adequately.
Please note that you need to answer only FOUR cases. I will grade only the first
four cases submitted.
It is expected that each person will do his or her own work on these individual
cases. Scholastic dishonesty on any of the assignments will merit a grade of F
for the course. Examples of scholastic dishonesty meriting F includes but is not
limited to: cheating, plagiarism, collusion, falsifying academic records, and
misrepresenting facts or any dishonest act to cause any advantage to self or
disadvantage to other students. Such acts will not be tolerated.
Discussion:
A significant percentage (30 %) of your grade will be determined by your
instructor's evaluation of your participation to discussions. Questions have been
furnished solely with the intent of providing a starting point for discussion. You
are not expected to treat these questions as an exercise with right and wrong
answers. Nor does the discussion need to stay centered on these questions.
DISCUSSION GRADING: You may earn up to 6 points for the discussion in each
module. Please note that sometimes a comment doesn't earn any
points. Comments that fail to earn points bring nothing to the discussion, e.g.
they repeat what has already been said, or they simply agree with a preceding
comment without adding anything new to the discussion. Most substantial
comments (one paragraph or so) fall into the 0.5 or so point range. This means
that, on the average, you need to consider making 6-7 meaningful comments to
earn the full points for discussion. To get full credit, you need to make sure that
you start posting early (on the first day) and often (at least 6-7 times). There are
NO limits on discussions.
INSTRUCTOR RESPONSE AND AVAILABILITY
I am almost always available through email (
[email protected]) and usually respond
within 12 hours. I may not be able to respond in such a timely fashion in some cases
(e.g., I am attending a conference or other situations where email may not be
available). In such cases, I will let you know of other options to get in touch with me.
You are also encouraged to call me (262-472-3971) and leave a message if I do not
respond to your call. I will get back to you as fast as possible. I plan on grading all
course aspects (individual cases, discussion, quizzes and group papers) within 24
hours after completion. You should expect your recorded grade within 48
hours. Furthermore, I will always provide some rubric with the expected answers for all
papers.
