LAS 3: Cohesive Devices

1. Definition
• Cohesive devices, also known as discourse markers, linking words, connectors, or transitional words, link different
parts of a text.

• They ensure ideas flow logically and clearly and help readers understand the relationship between sentences and
paragraphs.

• They enhance the overall coherence of the text.

2. Types / Functions
Cohesive devices serve various functions in writing:

• Addition: Introduce additional information.


• Examples: and, also, furthermore, moreover
• Usage: "She enjoys reading, and she also likes writing."

• Contrast: Highlight differences between ideas.


• Examples: but, however, although, whereas
• Usage: "He is tall, but his brother is short."

• Cause and Effect: Show relationships between actions and their outcomes.
• Examples: because, therefore, thus, consequently
• Usage: "It rained heavily; therefore, the match was postponed."

• Sequencing: Indicate the order of events or ideas.


• Examples: firstly, then, next, finally
• Usage: "First, preheat the oven; next, mix the ingredients."

• Illustration: Provide examples or clarify points.


• Examples: for example, for instance, such as
• Usage: "Many fruits are rich in vitamins; for example, oranges and strawberries."

• Comparison: Highlight similarities between ideas.


• Examples: similarly, likewise, in the same way
• Usage: "She loves classical music; similarly, her brother enjoys jazz."

• Summarizing: Conclude or summarize points.


• Examples: in conclusion, to summarize, overall
• Usage: "In conclusion, regular exercise benefits both body and mind."

3. Sample Texts Using Different Cohesive Devices


Sample 1:

• "The company faced several challenges this quarter. However, they managed to increase their profits. Moreover,
customer satisfaction improved significantly."

Sample 2:

• "She wanted to buy a new dress. However, she didn't have enough money. Therefore, she decided to save up until she
could afford it."
