CHAPTER 1: EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

As part of my academic curriculum, I undertook an internship at *Bharat Electronics Limited

(BEL), specifically in the **Advanced Defence Systems Naval (ADSN) – Staticial Business Unit
(SBU)*. BEL is a prominent public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Defence, Government of
India, engaged in the design and manufacture of cutting-edge defense electronics systems. The
ADSN SBU specializes in naval systems, including integrated weapon platforms, surveillance
systems, and radar technologies.

During my internship, I gained valuable insights into BEL's contribution to national defense
through their sophisticated radar and weapons systems. I was introduced to several critical
defense projects and technologies, including:

* MF-STAR (Multi-Function Surveillance Threat Alert Radar): A state-of-the-art radar system used
in modern naval ships for simultaneous tracking, surveillance, and threat detection.
* WCS (Weapon Control System): A mission-critical system designed to control and coordinate
various onboard weapons.
* VLU (Vertical Launch Unit): A launch system enabling vertical deployment of missiles from naval
platforms, ensuring faster response and reduced radar signature.

Throughout the internship, I engaged in technical discussions, product demonstrations, and

interactive sessions with engineers and project teams. This enabled me to build a foundational
understanding of complex defense systems and their integration into naval platforms.

#Learning Objectives and Outcomes Achieved:

1. Understand radar technologies – Gained knowledge of radar principles, their types, and naval
application, especially through MF-STAR.
2. Familiarity with integrated weapon system – Learned the operation of WCS and how it
interfaces with radar and launch units.
3. Exposure to defense-grade hardware and systems – Understood the stringent requirements for
design and manufacturing in defense applications.
4. Comprehend the functioning of VLU systems – Acquired insight into the mechanics and
electronics involved in vertical missile launch systems.
5. Professional development in a defense R\&D environment – Improved communication skills,
technical vocabulary, and learned industry-standard protocols in the defense sector.
