Final RF Lab Report

The RF and Microwave Engineering Laboratory report details an experiment on the radiation pattern of a half-wave dipole antenna, focusing on measurements in various planes including Co-E, Cross-E, Cross-H, and Co-H. Results indicated maximum power direction, 3 dB bandwidth, and symmetry of the patterns, with the dipole exhibiting a figure-eight radiation pattern. The findings confirmed expected characteristics of the antenna, including broadside radiation and the presence of cross-polarization at lower levels.

RF and Microwave Engineering Lab Report
Objectives:
1. To study the radiation pattern of a half-wave dipole antenna.
2. To measure the power variation with respect to angles in different planes.
3. To observe the radiation pattern of the dipole antenna in Co-E, Cross-E, Cross-H, and Co-H planes.
4. To determine: (i) maximum power direction, (ii) 3 dB bandwidth, (iii) symmetry of the pattern.
Theory:
The half-wave dipole antenna, with a length approximately /2, is one of the most fundamental
antennas.
Its radiation is strongest in the plane perpendicular to its axis, forming a figure-eight pattern.
Theoretical
radiation is given by: U( ) [cos(( /2)cos ) / sin ]^2. The main characteristics include:
- Broadside radiation maximum.
- Nulls along the axis.
- Symmetry in the azimuth plane.
- Co-polar and cross-polar components indicating polarization purity.
Results:
- Distance between transmitter and receiver: 3 meters.
- Co-E Plane: Max power -50.2 dBm at 0.9°. 3 dB bandwidth ~26°.
- Cross-E Plane: Max at 19.8°. Lower amplitude compared to Co-E.
- Cross-H Plane: Peaks near 355° and 357°.
- Co-H Plane: Broad maxima at 323° and 356°.
- Patterns showed near symmetry, with small deviations due to experimental setup.
Conclusion:
The dipole antenna produced the expected figure-eight radiation pattern with clear main lobes in the
Co-E plane.
Cross-polarization was present but at lower levels. The measured 3 dB bandwidth confirmed directive
radiation.
