Displacement Reactions Note 2

Displacement reactions are categorized into single displacement, double displacement, and non-metal displacement. In single displacement, one element replaces another in a compound, while double displacement involves two compounds exchanging ions. The reactivity series is used to predict the feasibility of these reactions.

Types of Displacement Reactions

1. Single Displacement Reaction:

A single element replaces another in a compound.
Example: Fe + CuSO₄ → FeSO₄ + Cu

2. Double Displacement Reaction (less common in metals):

Two compounds exchange their ions to form new compounds.
Example: NaCl + AgNO₃ → NaNO₃ + AgCl (precipitate)

3. Non-metal Displacement (e.g. halogens):

Cl₂ + KI → KCl + I₂

Note:
Reactivity series helps predict feasibility of displacement reactions.
