Data Center Document 5: Data Center Tier Classification
The Uptime Institute's Tier Classification system defines the reliability and availability of data
center infrastructure. There are four tiers:
Tier I (Basic Capacity): Single path for power and cooling. No redundancy. 99.671%
availability.
Tier II (Redundant Capacity): Single power path with some redundant components.
99.741% availability.
Tier III (Concurrently Maintainable): Multiple power and cooling paths. Components
can be maintained without downtime. 99.982% availability.
Tier IV (Fault Tolerant): Fully redundant systems with no single point of failure.
99.995% availability.
Higher tiers require more investment but offer increased reliability. Tier classification helps
organizations design and evaluate data centers based on business continuity needs.
Compliance with Tier standards supports SLAs, disaster recovery planning, and long-term
scalability.
