One of a kind Graduation Ceremony
‘Education has given me the strength to deal with the pain I am going
through’, says Shobha, a student of Tata Institute of Social Sciences,
Hyderabad and our inpatient, at her Graduation Ceremony.
With all the determination and love for Nenavath Shobha, Sparsh Hospice
team in association with her professors and near and dear ones came
together to make the graduation ceremony possible in the comfortable
space of Sparsh Hospice.
With her sparkling and smiling face she thanked Sparsh, her professors
and mentors, friends and family who made the day memorable.
The 19-year-old is a first-generation graduate, that too from the prestigious
Tata Institute of Social Sciences. She completed her B.A (Social Sciences)
and received her graduation certificate in a ceremony held at Sparsh
Hospice. It was a joyful ocassion in the presence of her family, village
members, friends, teachers, mentors and others.
During her graduation speech she advocated for right to education for
women and gilrs in the marginalised sections of society. It was her dream
that girls from her village would get college education and be able to
contribute to society as equals.
Problems Faced
by over 96% of terminally ill people
Millions of individuals do not have access to palliative and hospice care at the appropriate juncture, leading to considerable
suffering for both patients and their families. This often results in exhaustive searches for suitable healthcare facilities, where,
unfortunately, many individuals are kept on life support without meaningful outcomes.
This problem has to be addressed holistically to give the terminally ill a comfortable and dignified departure.
Which is their right!
Challenges!
Access & availability: Only a handful of palliative care
centres are present, and are not integrated into the
healthcare system
Stigma & misconception: Leading to patient die in
loneliness.
Financial crunch: The financial burden of treatment
prevents people from coming forward for palliative
care.
Lack of awareness: Limited knowledge among the
public, but also amongst the medical fraternity.
The Big Problem
Less than 4% of India’s 140 cr people
have access to Palliative care.
96%
needy terminally ill do not have
1 in 5 suicides
are committed by a person living with an
access to palliative care advanced, chronic or life-limiting
condition.
HUGE GAP 200 / day
The National Health Policy of 2017
focused on instituting palliative care as cancer patients are being termed as
part of primary health care. But there is ‘terminal’ only in Hyderabad imagine
huge gap in the implementation of the adding non cancer and other cities and
policy areas of India.
