PMI Testing Procedure - Standard

This document outlines the procedure for Positive Material Identification (PMI) to ensure that alloy steel and stainless steel pressure parts meet specified requirements. It details the scope, process, acceptance criteria, and record-keeping for PMI testing, which involves using portable analyzers and conducting tests on a percentage of materials and weld joints. The document is applicable to various pressure equipment and emphasizes compliance with relevant material codes and standards.

PROCEDURE FOR POSITIVE MATERIAL IDENTIFICATION Rev. : 00
PAGE : 1 of 1
Date : 07.06.2018
1.0 OBJECTIVE :

To assure that material and weld composition of pressure parts made from alloy steel / stainless
steel materials conforms to the specified requirement.

2.0 SCOPE :

This procedure is applicable for site welded pressure parts like headers, coils, piping, tanks,
vessels and other pressure equipment made from alloy steel / SS materials.

3.0 REFERENCE :

Drawings , applicable material standards , ASME Section I

4.0 PROCESS :

i) Portable X-Ray Fluorescence type analyzer such as Metorex, X-Met 2000 TX or X-Met
2000 TX +Metal Master or NITON-II analyzer metal scan or similar analyzer shall be
used for carrying out PMI testing key elements which distinguish the material from other
materials.
ii) Testing shall be done after proper surface cleaning, if required a spot shall be prepared by
grinding process.

iii) Before testing, the machine shall be calibrated in HO or at site with standard calibration
blocks for the grade of material to be tested.

iv) PMI shall be conducted at random on 10% quantity of base material and 100% of site weld
joints material of each lot.

v) PMI shall be conducted after welding but before hydro-testing.

5.0 ACCEPTANCE:

Material shall be accepted on the basis of composition as specified in relevant material code /
standard. Deposited weld metal / base metal shall be within ± 10% of the ranges allowed by the
welding consumable code or as per ASTM / ASME Standards.

6.0 RECORD:

Records shall be maintained in the format IQA/PMI
