An Application Programming Interface (API) key is intended to enable specific software functions. In the case of Google
Maps, they have chosen to use API keys to track map downloads. The terms of their keys are generous, allowing up to
25,000 map tiles per day to be downloaded with no charge. However, this decision does mean that you need to identify
your copy of easyMap Tools to Google. This is done by creating an API key unique to your copy of easyMap Tools.
These instructions are for obtaining a free Google API key, for easyMap Tools, which will allow you to use up to 7 map
levels. Please be aware that you don’t need this key to get maps with three zoom levels from Google. Also, easyMap
Tools will source maps from OpenStreetMaps, if you choose to go that route.
There are many ways to get a Google API key, and the process can be complex. Also, the process may change from time-
to-time. This procedure outlines one of simpler methods to get API keys from Google.
The general idea is that you need to turn on the keys for “Google Maps JavaScript API v3” and the “Static Maps API”.
There may be other keys enabled by default, and that’s OK. But these two keys need to be turned on by you. Once
enabled, if you are using the old API key interface, you can go directly to the “API Key Access” screen and get your key. If
you are using a different API key interface, you may need to specify that you want to “Create a New Browser Key”.
Here are the step-by-step instructions for the simplest way to get a valid Google API key for easyMap Tools:
1. Before obtaining a Google API Key, you must have a Google account. Once you have an account, you can start
the process to get a Google API key.
