Acceleration Practice Sheet #1

The document is an acceleration practice sheet that defines acceleration as a change in velocity and provides the equation for calculating it. It includes several problems requiring students to calculate average acceleration based on given scenarios and also asks students to identify examples of acceleration. Additionally, it prompts students to classify the identified examples as positive or negative acceleration.

Acceleration Practice Sheet #1

Acceleration - A change in velocity (speed or direction)

So an acceleration can mean an object speeding up, slowing down or

changing direction

Equation: Acceleration = Final velocity – Initial velocity

Time

Problems: In order to receive credit for this worksheet you MUST show your
work. You can use a calculator but you must show all of the steps in the
spaces provided.

1. A roller coaster car rapidly picks up speed as it rolls down a slope. As it starts
down the slope, its speed is 4 m/s. But 3 seconds later, at the bottom of the
slope, its speed is 22 m/s. What is its average acceleration?

2. A cyclist accelerates from 0 m/s to 8 m/s in 4 seconds. What is his acceleration ? Is

this
acceleration higher than that of a car which accelerates from 0 to 32 m/s in 8 seconds?

3. A car advertisement states that a certain car can accelerate from rest to 19 m/s in 7
seconds. Find the car’s average acceleration.
4. A lizard runs away at 4 m/s and stops in a hole after 4 seconds. What is the lizard’s
average acceleration?

Identify which of the following is acceleration or not.

5) A golf ball being hit. _________________________

6) A train traveling straight at 65 mph. ____________________

7) A race car traveling 110 mph around the curve of a track. ______________

8) A moving car slowing down at a stop sign. ____________________

9) Jogging 3 m/s around a track. ________________________

10) An asteroid traveling in space straight at 1,000 mph. __________________

11) Return to questions 5-10 and identify which are positive or negative
acceleration.
