Giorgio Armani
An Icon of Timeless Elegance
Giorgio Armani, born on July 11, 1934 in Piacenza (Italy), is one of the few most
influential figures in contemporary fashion. His career had an unconventional
beginning: after dropping out of medical school and completing his military service,
he worked as a window dresser and salesman in a Milanese department store.
These early experiences sparked his interest in fashion, which led him to design
some pieces for Nino Cerruti in the 1960s.
In 1975, Armani co-founded Giorgio Armani S.p.A. in Milan with his partner Sergio
Galeotti. The brand quickly gained recognition for its men's designs and its unique
approach to women's fashion, especially with the introduction of the "power suit,"
which completely changed women's professional attire. Armani's signature style,
characterized by clean lines and luxurious fabrics, became synonymous with
elegance and sophistication.
Armani's relationship with Hollywood incredibly boosted his international fame. His
work in films such as American Gigolo (1980), in which he dressed Richard Gere,
cemented his status as the go-to designer for all movie stars. Over the years, he
has dressed numerous celebrities and designed the costumes for several films,
increasing his influence in popular culture.
Over the decades, Armani continued to expand his empire with lines such as
Emporio Armani, Armani Exchange and Armani Privé, catering to a wide range of
markets, from affordable fashion to haute couture. He also diversified into many
other sectors, such as hospitality, interior design and consumer electronics,
collaborating with Samsung to create absolute luxury products.
Despite the enormous expansion of his brand, Giorgio Armani has maintained tight
control over his company, remaining the sole shareholder and personally
overseeing all aspects of his business. His dedication and vision have made him a
pile of the fashion industry, with a career that continues to exemplify excellence
and innovation in design.
