CLOCKS & TIME

ANALOGUE DIGITAL
CLOCK CLOCK

Analogue clocks Digital clocks can show

show 12-hour time. 12- and 24-hour time.
ANALOGUE
CLOCK
An analogue clock shows the
numbers 1 - 12. This means two
full rotations represents 24 hours
(one day).

When an analogue clock shows

a specific time, let’s say 8.30, it
could mean 8.30am or 8.30pm.
AM vs. pm
AM and PM are abbreviations used to tell time in the
12-hour clock format.

AM – Ante Meridiem PM – Post Meridiem

This is Latin for “before This is Latin for “after
midday” or “before noon”. midday” or “after noon”.
AM refers to the time from PM refers to the time from
midnight (12:00 AM) to just noon (12:00 PM) to just
before noon (11:59 AM). before midnight (11:59 PM).
DIGITAL
CLOCK An analogue clock could show
time in two main ways:

12-hour time: 4:30am

24-hour time: 04:30
12-HOUR TIME

12-hour time needs to include am or pm because it

breaks up the day into to 12 hour halves.

The am and pm tell us:

It is before midday (in the morning)
It is after midday (in the afternoon/evening)
24-HOUR TIME

24-hour time covers all 24 hours in one day so it

does not need to show am or pm.

For 24-hour time:

0:00 - 11:59 is midnight to (almost) midday
12:00 - 23.59 is midday to (almost) midnight
To convert 12-hour time to 24-
hour time, add 12 to the hours
after midday.

For example: 2:00pm is after midday.

2 + 12 = 14
This means, 2:00pm is 14:00 in 24-hour time.
To convert 24-hour time to 12-
hour time, subtract 12 from the
hours after midday.

For example: 16:45 is after midday.

16 - 12 = 4
This means, 16:45 is 4:45pm in 24-hour time.
12-hour TIME 24-hour TIME 12-hour TIME 24-hour TIME

LET’S TRY A PROBLEM

Esther was given a new digital clock for her birthday.

Her Grandma set it up to show 24-hour time.

The clock is showing 17:45. Esther has soccer training

at 6:30pm. She isn’t sure if she’s late!

Can you help her?

17:45 is after 12:00. This means it is after midday
(the 2nd half of the day).
To convert 17:45 into 12-hour time, we need
to subtract 12 hours.

17 - 12 = 5

This means it is 5:45pm in the afternoon.

Esther isn’t late for soccer training!

TIME DETECTIVES:
SOLVE THE MYTERY!
OBJECTIVE:

To enhance students’ skills in reading,

converting, and using 12-hour and 24-hour
time formats through a fun mystery-
solving game
INSTRUCTIONS:
Set the Scene:
The teacher tell the class they are Time
Detectives trying to solve a mystery about when
a special event happened.
Mystery Problem:
“The school’s prized trophy disappeared during
the day. The last known sightings of the trophy
were at different times recorded by different
teachers using either 12-hour or 24-hour clocks.
Your mission is to put these times in order and
find out when the trophy was last seen!”
INSTRUCTIONS:
Clue Distribution:
Give each group or pair a set of 5 clue cards, each
with a time noted either in 12-hour or 24-hour format.
“Teacher A saw the trophy at 14:30”
“Teacher B noticed it missing at 3:15 PM”
“The janitor saw it at 08:45”
“The principal checked at 19:00”
“The librarian last saw it at 12:00 PM”
INSTRUCTIONS:

Tasks:
Convert all times to the same format (either
12-hour or 24-hour).
Arrange the times in chronological order.
Based on the order, discuss and decide
when the trophy was last seen and by whom.
INSTRUCTIONS:
Class Discussion:
Groups share their timeline and reasoning.
The teacher confirms the correct order and
time conversions.
answers and
explanation
CLUE TIMES GIVEN:
Teacher A saw the trophy at 14:30 (24-hour)
Teacher B noticed it missing at 3:15 PM (12-
hour)
The janitor saw it at 08:45 (24-hour)
The principal checked at 19:00 (24-hour)
The librarian last saw it at 12:00 PM (12-hour)
STEP 1: CONVERT ALL TIMES TO THE SAME
FORMAT (LET’S USE 24-HOUR FORMAT):
ORIGINAL TIME CONVERTED TO 24-HOUR FORMAT

14:30 14:30 (already in 24-hour)

3:15 PM 15:15

08:45 08:45 (already in 24-hour)

19:00 19:00 (already in 24-hour)

12:00 PM 12:00
STEP 2: ARRANGE THE TIMES IN
CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER:

08:45 (Janitor)
12:00 (Librarian)
14:30 (Teacher A)
15:15 (Teacher B)
19:00 (Principal)
STEP 3: INTERPRETATION
The janitor saw the trophy earliest at 08:45 AM
The librarian saw it at noon (12:00 PM)
Teacher A still saw it at 2:30 PM
Teacher B noticed it missing at 3:15 PM
(meaning after 15:15, the trophy was already
gone)
The principal checked again at 7:00 PM (19:00)
but presumably didn’t find it
ANSWER:

The trophy was last seen by Teacher A at 14:30

(2:30 PM) and was noticed missing by Teacher B at
15:15 (3:15 PM).
So, the trophy disappeared sometime between
2:30 PM and 3:15 PM.
WORD PROBLEMS
involving
time format
1. Understand the time format given

12-hour format uses AM/PM.

24-hour format does not use AM/PM.

12-Hour 24-Hour
1:00 AM 01:00
12:00 PM 12:00
1:00 PM 13:00
11:59 PM 23:59
12:00 AM 00:00
2. Identify if you're converting:

From 24-hour to 12-hour:

If the hour is greater than 12, subtract 12 and add PM
If the hour is 00, it's 12 AM
If the hour is 12, it's 12 PM

From 12-hour to 24-hour:

If AM and hour is 12 →becomes 00
If PM and hour is not 12 →add 12 to the hour
3. Apply the conversion rule

Examples:

24-hour to 12-hour:
18:45→ 18 - 12 = 6 →
6:45 PM

12-hour to 24-hour:
7:20 PM → 7 + 12 = 19:20
4. Answer clearly
State the converted time in the format asked.
Include AM or PM if using the 12-hour format.
1. Marie has a digital clock in her room. The time
shown in the digital clock is 20:15. What time will
be shown if the clock in the living room is an
analog clock (12-hour format)?
To convert 20:15 from 24-hour format to 12-hour
format:
20:15 means 20 hours and 15 minutes after midnight.
Subtract 12 from 20:
20 - 12 = 8
✅ So, 20:15 (24-hour format) is 8:15 PM (12-hour
format).

Answer: 8:15 PM
2. Carl was working late. He checked his mobile
phone and saw that it was already 0:35. What is
its equivalent time in the 12-hour format?
To convert 0:35 from 24-hour format to 12-hour format:

0:35 is 35 minutes after midnight.

In 12-hour format, this is simply 12:35 AM.

✅ Answer: 12:35 AM
3. Jane was waiting for the sunset. She checked the
time on her mobile phone and saw that it was 5:29.
What format was Jane’s mobile phone set to?
The time 5:29 can appear in both 12-hour and 24-hour
formats:
In 12-hour format, it could be 5:29 AM or 5:29 PM
(depending on context).
In 24-hour format, 5:29 is interpreted as 5:29 AM.
Since no AM or PM is shown and the time is written as
5:29, it is most likely in 24-hour format, where AM/PM
is not used.

✅ Answer: 24-hour format

4. School ends at exactly 15:30. What is its
equivalent time in the 12-hour format?
To convert 15:30 from 24-hour format to 12-hour
format:
15:30 means 15 hours and 30 minutes after midnight.
Subtract 12 from 15:

15 - 12 = 3

✅ Answer: 3:30 PM
1. Andrew received a text message from his
father to meet him at exactly 1:15 PM. What
time does Andrew need to meet his father
using the 24-hour format?
To convert 1:15 PM from 12-hour format to 24-hour
format:
For PM times (except 12 PM), add 12 to the hour:

1 + 12 = 13

✅ Answer: 13:15
