Abstract:
This project aims to develop an IoT-based Smart Waste Management System that monitors
waste bin levels in real-time and optimizes garbage collection routes. The system will
consist of smart bins equipped with ultrasonic sensors, microcontrollers (ESP32), and
wireless modules. Data will be collected, stored in the cloud, and visualized on a web
dashboard with notification alerts. The methodology includes designing a hardware
prototype, integrating it with cloud services, and building a full-stack web application. The
project will enhance urban waste management efficiency, reduce operational costs, and
contribute to sustainable smart city development.

Background and Rationale:
Urban areas suffer from inefficient waste collection, leading to overfilled bins, pollution, and
poor hygiene. Manual monitoring is resource-intensive and lacks real-time tracking. With
the rise of smart cities and IoT, there's a need for an automated system that not only
monitors bin levels but also optimizes collection schedules. This project addresses that gap
by proposing a scalable solution using modern technology that supports environmental
goals and operational efficiency.

Objectives:
● Design a smart bin prototype with level detection using ultrasonic sensors.
● Integrate ESP32 microcontroller with Wi-Fi to transmit data to the cloud.
● Build a web dashboard for live bin status and data analytics.
● Implement alert systems for full bin detection.
● Suggest optimized collection routes based on bin status.
● Ensure system scalability for multiple locations.

Methodology:
Hardware Design:
- Components: ESP32, ultrasonic sensors, Li-Ion battery, Wi-Fi module.
- Prototype a small-scale smart bin.
Software Stack:
- Backend: Node.js with Express
- Frontend: React.js for dashboard
- Database: Firebase or MongoDB for real-time updates
- Integration: MQTT or HTTP for data transfer
Cloud Services:
- Firebase or AWS IoT for device communication and cloud storage.
- Notification via email/SMS using Twilio API or Firebase Cloud Messaging.
Analysis Methods:
- Data logging and visualization.
- Alert trigger when bin level exceeds threshold.
- Route suggestion using Google Maps API.

Expected Outcomes:
● A functional smart waste bin prototype.
● A live web dashboard showing real-time bin levels.
● Notification and alert system for full bins.
● Route optimization logic for waste collectors.
● Potential reduction in operational time and cost.
● Environmental improvement through timely waste disposal.

Scalability of Project:
The system can be expanded to serve multiple residential societies, industrial areas, and
city zones. With 5G and edge computing, it can become a market-ready SaaS product for
municipalities and private waste management firms.
