Unit Test - Physics - Set 2

This document is a unit test for Class XII Physics, consisting of multiple sections with questions on electric fields, capacitance, and electrostatics. It includes questions of varying marks, covering topics such as electric flux, equilibrium of charges, and the behavior of capacitors. The test aims to assess students' understanding of fundamental concepts in electricity and magnetism.

DEMS – 2022-23

UNIT TEST – 1
CLASS XII (PHYSICS)
SET – 2

Section A: (6 questions of 1 mark each)

1. Two charges of magnitudes – 2Q and + Q are located at points (a, 0) and (4a, 0)
respectively. What is the electric flux due to these charges through a sphere of radius 3a
with its centre at the origin?
2. Two point charges +q and –q are placed d distance apart. Draw the line on which the
resultant field is parallel to the line joining the two charges.
3. A charge q is placed at the centre of a cube of side l. What is the electric flux passing
through two opposite faces of the cube?
4. A metal plate is introduced between the plates of a charged parallel plate capacitor. What is
its effect on the capacitance of the capacitor?
5. In which orientation, a dipole placed in a uniform electric field is in (i) stable, (ii) unstable
equilibrium?
6. A 500 μC charge is at the centre of a square of side 10 cm. Find the work done in moving a
charge of 10 μC between two diagonally opposite points on the square.

Section B: (5 questions of 2 marks each)

7. Two fixed point charges + 4 e and + e units are separated by a distance ‘a’. Where should
the third point charge be placed for it to be in equilibrium?
8. An oil drop of mass m and charge – q is to be held stationary in the gravitational field of the
earth. What is the magnitude and direction of the electrostatic field required for this
purpose?
9. Two point electric charges of unknown magnitude and sign are placed at a distance d
apart. The electric field intensity is zero at a point, not between the charges but on the line
joining them. Write two essential conditions for this to happen.
10. Two spherical conductors A and B of radii rA and rB (rA > rB) are given equal amounts of
charge. In which direction will the charge flow when these spheres are brought in contact?
Give reason for your answer.
11. Derive the expression for the capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor having plate area A
and plate separation d.

Section C: (3 questions of 3 marks each)

12. Derive an Expression for the effective capacitance when capacitors are connected in
(a) series
(b) parallel

13. A spherical conductor of radius 12 cm has a charge of 1.6 × 10 -7 C distributed uniformly on

its surface. What is the electric field

a. inside the sphere

b. just outside the sphere
c. at a point 18 cm from the centre of the sphere?
14. Derive, with the help of a suitable diagram, an expression for the torque on an electric
dipole in uniform electric field.

Section D: (2 questions of 5 marks each)

15. A) An electric dipole is rotated through some angle in a uniform electric field. Obtain an
expression for the work done in rotating the dipole.
[2]

B) Two large, thin metal plates are parallel and close to each other. On their inner faces,
the plates have surface charge densities of opposite signs and of magnitude 17.0 × 10 -22
C/m2. What is E: (i) in the outer region of the first plate, (ii) in the outer region of the second
plate, and (iii) between the plates?
[3]

16. A) Show that the work done in an electric field is independent of path.
[2]

B) A 600pF capacitor is charged by a 200V supply. It is then disconnected from the supply
and is connected to another uncharged 600 pF capacitor. How much electrostatic energy is
lost in the process?
