EEE2044S TUTORIAL EXERCISE 3: INTRODUCTION TO POWER ENGINEERING

Instructions: Please answer all questions. Show your workings at all times. You are not required to hand-in this
tutorial exercise. However, it serves as a guide for what you can expect in the tests and the exam.

P.C. Sen Problem 1.15

1. The magnetic circuit for a saturable reactor is shown in Fig. 1a. The B−H curve for the core material can be
approximated as two straight lines as in Fig. 1b.
(a) If I1 =2.0 A, calculate the value of I2 required to produce a flux density of 0.6 T in the vertical limbs.
(b) If I1 =0.5 A and I2 =1.96 A, calculate the total flux in the core.
Neglect magnetic leakage.
(Hint: Trial-and-error method.).
(𝐼𝐼2 = −2.53𝐴𝐴; 𝛷𝛷 = 0.18 × 10−3𝑊𝑊𝑊𝑊)

P.C. Sen Problem 2.1

2. A 1 phase, 4600/460 V. 60Hz, transformer is connected to single phase, 60Hz, 4600V power supply. The
maximum flux density in the core is 0.85T. If the induced voltage per turn is 10V, determine:
a) The primary turns (𝑁𝑁1) and the secondary turns (𝑁𝑁2).
b) The cross-sectional area (Ac) of the core.
(𝑁𝑁1 = 460, 𝑁𝑁2 = 46; 𝐴𝐴𝑐𝑐 = 0.044𝑚𝑚2)

3. An iron ring has a cross-sectional area of 500mm2 and a mean length of 300mm. It is wound with 70 turns and
its relative permeability is 1600. Calculate:
a) The current required to set up a flux of 250𝜇𝜇𝜇𝜇𝜇𝜇,
b) The inductance of the system, and
c) The induced e.m.f, if the field collapses in 1ms.
(𝑖𝑖 = 1.066 𝐴𝐴; 𝐿𝐿 = 16.42 𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚, 𝑒𝑒 = −17.5 𝑉𝑉)

4. A single phase 50Hz transformer has 40 primary turns and 200 secondary turns. The cross-sectional area of
the core is 270cm2. When the primary winding is connected to a 300V supply, determine:
a) The maximum value of the flux in the core, and
b) The voltage induced in the secondary winding.
(𝛷𝛷 = 0.034 𝑊𝑊𝑊𝑊; 𝑒𝑒2 = 1.5 𝑘𝑘𝑘𝑘)

E. Hughes Ex. 34.2

5. A single phase transformer has 480 turns on the primary and 90 turns on the secondary. The mean length of
the flux path in the core is 1.8m and the joints are equivalent to an air-gap of 0.1mm. The value of the magnetic
field strength for 1.1T in the core is 400 𝐴𝐴𝐴𝐴/𝑚𝑚. If the maximum value of the flux density is to be 1.1T when
a potential difference of 2200V at 50Hz is applied to the primary. Calculate:
a) The cross-sectional area (Ac) of the core.
b) The secondary voltage on no-load.
c) The maximum value of magnetising current.
(𝐴𝐴𝑐𝑐 = 0.0187 𝑚𝑚2; 𝑉𝑉2 = 413 𝑉𝑉, 𝑖𝑖𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚𝑚 = 1.682 𝐴𝐴)
