Class II Science Questions - Chapter 2: The

Green World
(a) Activity-Based Questions (3 marks each)
1. Collect 5 different leaves from your garden. Draw them and write whether
they belong to trees, shrubs, herbs, climbers or creepers.

Answer: Students should collect leaves and identify them correctly. Trees have thick woody
stems and grow tall (like mango, neem). Shrubs are smaller with many branches (like rose,
jasmine). Herbs are very small with soft green stems (like mint, spinach). Climbers need
support to grow upright (like money plant, grapevine). Creepers grow along the ground (like
watermelon, cucumber, pumpkin).

2. Plant some kidney bean seeds in a pot. Water them daily and observe for 7
days. Write what you see each day.

Answer: Day 1-2: Seeds absorb water and swell. Day 3-4: Small roots appear from the seeds.
Day 5-6: Green shoots emerge from the soil. Day 7: Small leaves start to appear. This shows
how seeds grow into new plants with proper water and care.

3. Visit a park near your house. Count and list 3 trees, 3 shrubs, and 3 herbs
you see there.

Answer: Students should visit a park and make observations. Examples of trees: mango,
neem, banyan. Examples of shrubs: rose, hibiscus, bougainvillea. Examples of herbs: grass,
small flowering plants, mint. They should note the differences in size and stem thickness
between these plant types.

4. Take a plant with thorns. Draw it and explain why some plants have thorns.

Answer: Students should draw plants like rose, cactus, or lemon plant with thorns. Thorns
protect plants from being eaten by animals. They act like natural shields to keep the plant
safe. This helps the plant survive and grow without being damaged by hungry animals.

5. Make a chart showing the different parts of a plant using real pictures or
drawings.

Answer: The chart should show: Root (grows underground, takes water and nutrients), Stem
(supports the plant, carries water and food), Leaves (make food for the plant), Flowers
(produce fruits), Fruits (contain seeds for new plants). Each part has a special job to help the
plant live and grow.

6. Grow a money plant in water. Observe how it climbs and write your
observations.
Answer: Money plant is a climber with weak stems. It needs support to grow upright and
cannot stand on its own. When given a stick or wall, it wraps around it and climbs up. Its
roots can grow in water, and it produces new leaves as it climbs higher.

7. Compare the stems of a rose plant and a mint plant. Write 3 differences you
observe.

Answer: Rose plant has a thick, woody, hard stem while mint has a thin, soft, green stem.
Rose stem has thorns for protection while mint stem is smooth. Rose stem is stronger and can
support the plant alone while mint stem is weak and delicate.

8. Collect different types of fruits and classify them based on the plants they
come from (trees, shrubs, herbs, climbers, creepers).

Answer: Trees: mango, apple, coconut, banana. Shrubs: guava, pomegranate. Herbs: tomato,
chili. Climbers: grapes. Creepers: watermelon, muskmelon, pumpkin, cucumber. Each type of
plant produces different kinds of fruits that we eat.

9. Make a seed collection from 5 different fruits. Plant them and observe
which ones grow.

Answer: Students should collect seeds from mango, lemon, tomato, pumpkin, watermelon.
Plant them in soil, water regularly, and observe. Some seeds like tomato and pumpkin grow
quickly. Others like mango take longer. Seeds need water, air, and sunlight to grow into new
plants.

10. Create a mini garden with one tree sapling, one shrub, one herb, one
climber, and one creeper. Label each plant type.

Answer: Students should plant: Tree sapling (like neem or mango), Shrub (like rose or
hibiscus), Herb (like mint or coriander), Climber (like money plant with support), Creeper
(like pumpkin on ground). Each plant should be labeled with its type and special
characteristics noted.

(d) Critical Thinking Questions (2 marks each)

1. Why do you think climbers have weak stems? How does this help them
survive?

Answer: Climbers have weak stems because they use other plants or supports to reach
sunlight instead of making their own strong stems. This saves their energy which they can use
to grow longer and produce more leaves and fruits. It's a smart way to get sunlight without
spending energy on thick stems.

2. If all plants were trees, what problems might occur in nature?

Answer: If all plants were trees, small animals would have no grass or small plants to eat.
There would be no ground cover, so soil might wash away. Also, trees take many years to
grow, so if they died, it would take very long to replace them.

3. Why do some plants have thorns while others don't? Give examples.

Answer: Plants have thorns to protect themselves from animals that might eat them. Desert
plants like cactus have thorns because water is scarce and they cannot afford to be eaten.
Plants in safe places like mint don't need thorns because they can grow back quickly if eaten.

4. How do you think the shape and size of leaves help different plants?

Answer: Large leaves like banana can collect more sunlight to make food. Small needle-like
leaves in pine trees lose less water, which helps in cold places. Thick leaves in cactus store
water for dry times. Each leaf shape helps the plant survive in its environment.

5. What would happen if a plant had no roots? Explain your thinking.

Answer: Without roots, a plant cannot take water and nutrients from soil, so it would die
from thirst and hunger. It also cannot stand properly as roots hold the plant firmly in ground.
The plant would fall over and dry up quickly.

6. Why do you think creepers spread on the ground instead of growing

upward?

Answer: Creepers spread on ground because their stems are too weak to stand up. By
spreading on ground, they can cover more area to get sunlight and their heavy fruits like
pumpkins and watermelons are supported by the ground instead of breaking weak stems.

7. How do plants benefit us differently based on their types (trees, shrubs,

herbs)?
Answer: Trees give us fruits, wood, shade and oxygen. Shrubs give us flowers, some fruits
and make our gardens beautiful. Herbs give us vegetables, medicines and spices for cooking.
Each type of plant helps us in different ways for our daily needs.

8. What do you think would happen if we removed all the flowers from
plants?

Answer: If we removed all flowers, plants cannot make fruits and seeds. This means no new
plants would grow in future. Many animals and insects that eat nectar would also have no
food. The plant world would slowly disappear.

9. Why do you think some plants live for many years while others live for only
one season?

Answer: Plants that live for many years like trees have strong woody stems that can survive
harsh weather. Plants that live for one season like some herbs grow quickly, make seeds fast,
and die because they put all energy into reproduction rather than building strong stems.

10. How do different types of stems help plants survive in different places?

Answer: Thick woody stems in trees help them grow tall and survive strong winds. Soft
green stems in herbs help them grow quickly in good conditions. Thorny stems protect plants
from being eaten. Each stem type is suited to where the plant lives and what dangers it faces.
