Section:

I. Activity No. 1: Plant Power! Exploring How Soil Affects Growth (30 Minutes)

II. Objective(s): At the end of the activity, learners are expected to:
a. observe and record the growth of plants in different soil types;
b. identify the importance of soil for plant health;
c. compare and contrast plant growth in different soil conditions; and
d. explain how soil properties influence plant development.

III. Materials Needed:

Four (4) clear plastic cups or containers (same size)
Potting soil
Sand
Gravel (small pebbles)
Eight (8) Mung Bean seeds (same type)
Water spray bottle
Markers
Ruler
Observation chart (provided on this worksheet)

IV. Instructions:

1. Label each cup clearly with the type of soil it will contain: "Potting Soil," "Sand,"
"Gravel," and "Control" (no soil).
2. Fill each cup ¾ full with its designated material: Potting soil, sand, and gravel. For the
control, leave the cup empty.
3. Everything must be constant aside from the type of soil.
4. Plant two bean seeds in the center of each cup, about 1 inch deep. Gently press the soil
(or sand) around the seed.
5. Lightly spray all the cups with water until the soil or sand is moist but not soggy.
6. Record the everyday development of the mung bean seeds. On the third day, you will
be presenting the data in your observational chart.

Data Tables
Provide a table with sections for each cup (Potting Soil, Sand, Gravel, Control). Record your
observations daily in this table. Remember that you will have to report your preliminary results
from Day 1 to Day 3 as your performance task for this week but continue the observation up
to Day 5 and present your final result next week.
