Q.2. Solve the following.


a) State the parallel axis theorem with mathematical formula.
b) Define ‘Polar moment of Inertia’. Calculate Polar moment of Inertia for square lamina of

c) a) A hollow circular section having 200 mm external diameter and 100 mm internal diameter.
Calculate the moment of inertia of the section about any of the tangent. Also find polar
moment of inertia.
d) A square has 100 mm side. Calculate M.I. about it's vertical centroidal axis and about it's
polar axis. (Izz)

e) Calculate the moment of inertia about the axis A-A, for the lamina shown in the Figure No. 2.

3. Calculate MI for xx and yy for T -section Top flange 200mm x 10 mm and vertical
web - 100 x 10 mm .
4. A semicircular lamina has a base diameter of 140 mm. Calculate M.I. about its horizontal
and vertical centroidal axis. Also calculate the minimum radius of gyration.
5. A symmetrical I section has over all depth of 300 mm. It has flanges of size 150 mm × 10
mm and web thickness is 10 mm. Find M.I. about centroidal axis parallel to flange.
6. For a rectangular lamina 200 × 400 mm. Calculate the moment of inertia at bottom axis. c)
Determine the IXX and IYY of the T-section having dimensions. Top fange 80 × 20 mm
and web 20 mm × 80 mm.
7. Calculate moment of inertia and radius of gyration about XX and YY axis for a
semicircular lumina of diameter 100 mm.
8. Define ‘Polar moment of inertia’. Calculate Polar moment of inertia for square lamina of
side 30 cm. c) Calculate the least moment in inertia of a symmetrical I-section having
following details : Flanges : 150 mm × 20 mm Overall depth : 240 mm and Thickness of
web : 10 mm
9. Calculate centroidal moment of inertia about X-X axis of composite lamina made up of
with circular hole of 52 mm is removed from rectangular plate of 200 mm × 150 mm axis
symmetrically.
10. Calculate the moment of inertia of a hollow rectangle about an axis passing through base 200
mm size. The internal dimension and external dimensions of rectangle are 160 mm × 260 mm and
200 mm × 300 mm respectively.

Chapter 2 Stress and strain and Elastic constant

1 A mild steel flat 100 mm wide, 12 mm thick and 5 m long carries an axial load of 20 KN.
Find stress, strain and change in length of bar. Take E = 2 × 105 N/mm2.

2 A mild steel rod 20 mm in diameter and 300 mm long is enclosed centrally inside a hollow
copper tube of external diameter 30 mm and internal diameter 25 mm. This composite bar
is subjected to an axial pull of 40 KN. Find the stress developed in the rod and the tube.
Take Es = 200 KN/mm2 Ecu = 100 KN/mm2.
3 If modulus of elasticity E = 110 GPa and Modulus of rigidity = G = 45 GPa, find bulk
Modulus and Poisson's ratio.
4 A cube of 200 mm side is subjected to a compressive force of 3500 KN on all its faces.
The change in volume of the cube is 5000 mm3. Calculate the bulk modulus and modulus
of elasticity if Poission's ratio is 0.28.
5 An R.C.C. circular column has a diameter of 300 mm and it is reinforced with 8 steel bars.
The total area of steel bars is 2513.27 mm2. The column carries a load of 250 kN. If the
modulus of elasticity for steel is 18 times that of concrete. Find the stresses in concrete
and steel.
6 A mild steel flat 120 mm wide, 12 mm thick and 5 m long carries an axial load of 25 kN.
Find stress, strain and change in length of bar. Take E = 2 × 105 N/mm2.
7 A RCC column 450 mm × 300 mm is reinforced with 06 bars of 16 mm diameter.
Calculate stresses induced in steel and concrete, column is carrying an axial load of 900
kN. Take modular ratio = 18.
8 A metal rod 20 mm. diameter and 2.5 m long when subjected to tensile force 70 kN shows
an elongation 2.5 mm and reduction in diameter 0.006 mm. Calculate modulus of
elasticity, Poisson’s ratio and bulk modulus.
9 A straight bar 450 mm long is 20 mm in diameter for the first 250 mm length and 10 mm
in diameter for the remaining length. If the bar subjected to an axial pull for 10 kN. Find
the deformation of the bar. E = 200 GPa.
10 d) A metal bar of 50 mm × 50 mm in cross section, is subjected to axial compressive load
of 500 kN. The contraction of a 200 mm gauge length is found to be 0.5 mm and increase
in thickness is 0.04 mm. Find the values of Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio
11 In tension test a metal rod of 18 mm diameter and 30 cm long when subjected to a tensile
force 220 kN produces an elongation of 0.5 mm and reduction in diameter 0.0055 mm.
Calculate Poisson’s ratio.
12 A cube of 100 mm side is subjected to a uniform tensile stress of 60 N/mm2 on all faces.
Calculate the increase in volume of the cube. Take E = 2 × 105 N/mm2 and Poisson’s ratio
is 0.33.
13 A steel rod 4 m long and 20 mm diameter is subjected to an axial tensile load of 45 KN. Find the
change in length and diameter of rod. Take ES = 2 × 105 N/mm2 and µ = 0.25.

14 A metal rod 12 mm diameter and 2 m long when subjected to tensile force of 50 kN shows
an elongation of 2 mm. Calculate the modulus of elasticity.
15 Determine load shared by each material due to axial thrust of 1000 kN on composite steel
tube with 150 mm inside diameter and 6 mm thickness is filled with concrete. Take Esteel
= 210 × 103 N/mm2 and Econcrete = 14 × 103 N/mm2.

16 A compound stepped bar having solid steel rod of diameter 50 mm and solid copper
rod of diameter 20 mm is pulled by 180 kN. Calculate change in length of stepped bar. Take
Modulus of elasticity Es= 210 kN/mm2 and Ec = 110 kN/mm2.

18 In a tri-axial stress system, the stresses along the three directions are σx = 100 N/mm2
(tensile), σy = 60 N/mm2 (tensile) and σz = 30 N/mm2 (compressive). Find the strains in each
direction. Take E = 2 × 105 N/mm2 and µ = 0.25. If X = 400 mm, Y = 150 mm and Z = 300 mm.
Also calculate the change in volume
19 A steel bar is subjected to axial loads as shown in Fig. No. 5. Calculate deformation
of the bar. Take E = 210 GPa.

20 A member ABCD is subjected to point loads of P1, P2, P3 and P4 as shown in Figure
No. 1. Calculate the force P2 necessary for equilibrium, if P1 = 45 kN, P3 = 450 kN
and P4 = 130 kN. Determine the total elongation of the member, assuming the
modulus of elasticity to be 2.1 × 105 N/mm2.

21 )A m.s. square bar of cross section 10 mm × 10 mm is subjected to forces as shown in Fig No.
4. Calculate the change in length of bar. Take E = 200 × 103 N/mm2.
