Design of Butt Joint

The document outlines the design of a double cover butt joint for two plates, each 200 mm wide and 12 mm thick, to support a factored load of 500 kN using M20 grade 4.6 bolts. It includes calculations for the design shear strength and bearing strength of the bolts, determining that six bolts are required for the joint. Additionally, it checks the tensile strength of the plates, confirming that the design is safe as it exceeds the required load capacity.

Design of Butt joint

Problem 2
• Design a double cover joint between the two plates of width 200 mm,
and the thickness of plate is 12 mm. The joint has to transfer a factored
load of 500 kN. The plates are of Fe 410 grade. Use bolt of grade 4.6.
Solution
Assume M20 4.6 grade bolts
Diameter of bolt = 20mm
• Diameter of bolt hole, d0 = 20 +2 =22 mm (TABLE 19 , Pg 73 IS 800-2007)
Contd..
• Strength of bolt material, fub = 400 MPa (for grade 4.6 , TABLE 1 , Pg
13 IS 800-2007)
• Strength of plate material , fu = 410 MPa(for grade 410 , TABLE 1 , Pg
13 IS 800-2007)

• Assume the thickness of cover plate as 8 mm (to avoid failure of

cover plates, the total thickness of cover plate should be more than
the thickness of main plate)
Strength Calculation of bolt
1. Design shear strength of bolt (double shear)
𝑉𝑛𝑠𝑏
𝑉𝑑𝑠𝑏 =

𝑉𝑑𝑠𝑏 = 𝑛𝑛 𝐴𝑛𝑏 + 𝑛𝑠 𝐴𝑠𝑏 (IS 800-2007 CL 10.3.3 ,Pg 75)
𝛾𝑚𝑏 3
𝛾𝑚𝑏 = 1.25 (IS 800-2007 Table.5,Pg 30)
• (Assuming that the shear plane is through the threaded portion &
shank portion)
• nn = 1
• ns = 1
• nn and ns, means the shear plane with threads and without threads
intercepting the plate.
Contd..
• Anb = net tensile area of bolt to be considered at the root of the threads
= 0.78×π×d2/4
= 0.78 x π x 202/4
= 245.044 mm2
• Asb = π×d2/4

1 𝑓𝑢𝑏
• Design shear strength of one bolt, 𝑉𝑑𝑠𝑏 = 𝑛𝑛 𝐴𝑛𝑏 + 𝑛𝑠 𝐴𝑠𝑏
𝛾𝑚𝑏 3

𝑉𝑑𝑠𝑏 = 1 × 245.044 + 1 × 314.159

2. Design Bearing Strength of bolt

Where e and p are end and pitch distances (IS 800-2007 CL 10.2.2,10.2.4.2, Pg 73,74)

𝑉𝑑𝑝𝑏 = 99.974 kN

2. Design tensile strength of plate in rupture (cl 6.3 IS 800−2007 , Pg.32)
0.9 × 𝐴𝑛 × 𝑓𝑢
𝑇𝑑𝑛 =

Since there is no staggering Psi = 0

t = 12 mm
n = number of holes along width perpendicular to the direction of load
n= 2
d0 = 22mm
An = [ 200 -2 x22] x12
