Introduction

WHAT IS
DESIGN?
DESIGN
Design is the magic spark that transforms
ideas into reality with visual representation. IDEA
Visual representation refers to the
presentation of information or ideas
through visual elements. In the context of
graphic design, it involves using images,
symbols, and other visual components to
convey a message or tell a story. Visual
representation is a powerful tool for
REALITY
complex concepts
What is Graphic Design?
Graphic design is like the storytelling in which pictures are
used instead of words. It's the art of using visual elements like
images, typography, colors, and layouts to communicate
ideas, information, and emotions.
Graphic design is all about communicating through the means
of visual representations. It’s the visual link between the
business, brand, or producer, and the consumer.
ELEMENTS
OF DESIGN
ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
01. LINE
Line is made by joining two points, or
DOTS. The basic building block, lines can
be straight or curved, creating structure
and flow in a design.

It is used for Direction for example Road

Signs.

Types of line are 2d, 3d, Parallel ,

Perpendicular, Vertical, Horizontal and
Diagonal Lines
ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
02. SHAPE
The outline of an object; Enclosed areas
defined by lines.

Types of shape:

1- Geometric: Triangle, Square, Geometric Organic

Rectangle, Polygon etc.

2- Organic: Free hand shapes.

3- Abstract: Symbols. Abstract

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
03. COLOR
Color is one of the most obvious
elements of design, for both the user and
the designer. It can stand alone, as a
background, or be applied to other
elements, like lines, shapes, textures or
typography. Color creates a mood within
the piece and tells a story about the
brand. Every color says something
different, and combinations can alter that
impression further.
ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
04. TEXTURE
Texture refers to the surface quality or
"feel" of an object - smooth, rough, soft,
etc. Textures may be actual (felt with
touch like fluffy, hard, dry, etc) or implied
(suggested by the way an artist has
created the work of art). Visual texture
refers to the appearance and quality of a
surface, suggesting what it’s made of.
Almost everything around us has texture
and we can feel it both with a touch and
sight.
ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
05. TYPOGRAPHY
The art of arranging Fonts, sizes, and
spacing.

Typography also creates a visual

hierarchy in a design, by telling the
reader where to start and where to go.
You can do that by choosing different
characteristics for your text, such as size,
color, height, and weight.
ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
06. SIZE
Size is the distance between two
shapes.
• We can Compare.
• We can Attract.
• We can Organize.
• Used in Newspapers (Headlines ,
Body text).
ELEMENTS OF DESIGN
07. SPACE
Space is the area around the
elements in a design. It can be used
to separate or group information. Use
it effectively to give the eye a rest,
define importance and lead the eye
to where you want it to travel.

Negative Space is the areas of a

design that do not include any design
elements. The space is, effectively,
empty
PRINCIPLES
OF
DESIGN
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
01. BALANCE
This means distributing the visual
weight of your elements evenly
throughout the composition. Think it of
as placing heavy treasure chests on
both sides of the ship to keep it steady. BAD

You can achieve balance using

symmetrical or asymmetrical layouts,
playing with size, color, and negative
space.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
01. BALANCE
a. Symmetrical
b. Asymmetrical
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
02. CONTRAST
Creating visual interest and
emphasis by using differences in
color, size, shape, or other
elements. High contrast draws
attention and adds excitement.

03. EMPHASIS
Directing the viewer's attention to
focal point by using contrasting
elements, such as color, size, or
positioning.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
04. ALIGNMENT
Alignment is a crucial principle in
design that involves positioning
elements in relation to each other
within a layout. Proper alignment
creates a sense of order,
organization, and cohesiveness in
a design, leading to a more
visually pleasing and effective
composition.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
05. HIERARCHY
Organizing and prioritizing
information to guide the
viewer's eye through the
design. Important elements
should stand out and grab
attention.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
06. REPETITION
Repeating elements like colors,
shapes, or patterns to create a
sense of consistency and
cohesiveness throughout the
design.
PRINCIPLES OF DESIGN
07. WHITE SPACE

Leaving areas of a design empty to

create visual breathing room. Proper
use of white / negative space
enhances clarity and readability.
