Number Patterns

and Sequences

Whenever solving questions

regarding the number
patterns and sequences, it
is advised to consider two
things.
Number patterns and
sequences

First check whether the

numbers have a common
difference (i.e. 2, 5, 8….The
common difference in this
case is 3).
Number patterns and
sequences

Second check whether the

numbers are in a common
ratio (i.e. 2, 4, 6, 8,
16…..The common ratio in
this case is 2).
Number patterns and
sequences

If the numbers in the

sequence have a common
difference we can use the
following formula:

𝑇𝑛 = 𝑎 + (𝑛 − 1)𝑑
Number patterns and
sequences

Where:
𝑇𝑛= the term we are
finding.
a= first term.
n= number of term.
d= common difference.
Number patterns and
sequences

If the numbers in the

sequence have a common
ratio we can use the
following formula:

𝑇𝑛 = 𝑎𝑟𝑛−1
Number patterns and
sequences

Where:
𝑇𝑛 =the term we are
finding.
a= first term.
n= number of term.
r= common ratio.
Number patterns and
sequences

Differnece of differnce
formula:

an=a+(n-1)d1 + (n-1)(n-2)d2
1
2

sequences

Where:
𝑇𝑛 =the term we are
finding.
a= first term.
n= number of term.
d1= difference 1
d2= difference 2
