1 (a) State Graham’s law of diffusion. (1 mark)

Graham’s law of diffusion states that the rate of diffusion of a gas is

inversely proportional to the square root of its molar mass

(b) 20cm3 of an unknown gas Q takes 12.6 seconds to pass through a small orifice, 10cm3
of oxygen gas takes 11.2 seconds to diffuse through the same orifice under the same
conditions. Calculate the molecular mass of gas Q. (O=16.0) (3 marks)

3.A clean sample of steel wool was placed in a test-tube containing some moisture
and the test tube inverted over a trough of water. After three days, the volume of

air in the test tube changed from 20cm3 to 16cm3 and a brown layer formed on
the steel wool.
i)Give the systematic name of the brown layer formed. (1mark)
The brown layer formed on the steel wool is iron(III)
oxide, which is the result of the oxidation of iron by

oxygen in the moist air.
ii)Calculate the percentage decrease in the volume of air in the test tube. (2marks)
The percentage decrease in the volume of air can be
calculated by dividing the difference between the initial
and final volumes by the initial volume and multiplying
by 100. Therefore, the percentage decrease is (20 - 16) /
20 x 100 = 20%.
