Assignment no. 1 Module 1
1. In Hartnell governor, the lengths of ball and sleeve arms of bell crank lever are 120 mm and 100
mm respectively. The distance of the fulcrum of the bell crank lever from the governor axis is 140
mm. Each governor ball has a mass of 4 kg. The governor runs at a mean speed of 300 rpm with the
ball arms vertical and sleeve arms horizontal. For an increase of speed of 4%, the sleeve moves 10
mm upwards. Neglecting friction, Find
i) The minimum equilibrium speed if the total sleeve movement is limited to 20 mm.
ii) Spring stiffness
iii) The sensitiveness of the governor
2. A Porter governor has rotating mass of each ball 5 kg and mass on the sleeve is 25 kg. upper links
are 249 mm long and lower links are 349 mm long. The upper ends of upper links and lower ends of
lower links are hinged at 40 mm from the governor axis. Find equilibrium speed of the governor in
rpm when the governor rotates at 130 mm radius.
3. The rotor of a turbine installed in a boat with its axís along the longitudinal axis of the boat makes
1500 r.p.m. clockwise when viewed from the stern. The rotor has a mass of 750 kg and a radius of
gyration of 300 mm. If at an instant, the boat pitches in the longitudinal vertical plane so that the
bow rises from the horizontal plane with an angular velocity of 1 rad/s, determine the torque acting
on the boat and the direction in which it tends to turn the boat at the instant.
4. The turbine rotor of a ship has a mass of 3500 kg. It has a radius of gyration of 0.45 m and a speed
of 3000 r.p.m. clockwise when looking from stern. Determine the gyroscopic couple and its effect
upon the ship:
i) When the ship is steering to the left on a curve of 100 m radius at a speed of 36 km/h.
ii) When the ship is pitching in a simple harmonic motion, the bow falling with its maximum velocity.
The period of pitching is 40 seconds and the total angular displacement between the two extreme
positions of pitching is 12 degrees

Assignment no. 2 Module 2
1. What do you mean by dynamically equivalent systems? State the conditions for systems to be
dynamically equivalent.
2. The crank-pin circle radius of a horizontal engine is 300 mm. The mass of the reciprocating parts is
250 kg. When the crank has travelled 60° from I.D.C., the difference between the driving and the
back pressures is 0.35 N/mm2. The connecting rod length between centres is 1.2 m and the cylinder
bore is 0.5 m. If the engine runs at 250 r.p.m. and if the effect of piston rod diameter is neglected,
calculate: 1. pressure on slide bars, 2. thrust in the connecting rod, 3. tangential force on the crank-
pin, and 4. turning moment on the crank shaft.
3. A vertical double acting steam engine has a cylinder 300 mm diameter and 450 mm stroke and
runs at 200 r.p.m. The reciprocating parts have a mass of 225 kg and the piston rod is 50 mm
diameter. The connecting rod is 1.2 m long. When the crank has turned through 125° from the top
dead centre, the steam pressure above the piston is 30 kN/m² and below the piston is 1.5 kN/m².
Calculate the effective turning moment on the crank shaft.
4. A steam engine 200 mm bore and 300 mm stroke has a connecting rod 625 mm long. The mass of
the reciprocating parts is 15 kg and the speed is 250 r.p.m. When the crank is at 30° to the inner
dead centre and moving outwards, the difference in steam pressures is 840 kN/m². If the crank pin
radius is 30 mm determine: 1. the force on the crankshaft bearing; and 2. the torque acting on the
crank shaft.
