Practice Questions for Cognitive Abilities Test™ (CogAT®) Form 7 and 8
2nd Grade – Level 8
Complete Practice Test 1
154 Questions
HOW TO ADMINISTER THIS PRACTICE TEST
Materials You Will Need
• Practice Test – pages 3 - 69
• Answer Keys – pages 70 - 75
• Pencil(s) and good eraser(s)
Environment
• Make sure the child is working in a quiet, well-lit area where they will not be disturbed.
When a Child is Taking the Practice Test
• Give the child one set of questions at a time. First, go through the practice questions in
each set. You can modify the script that goes with each practice question to make sure
the child understands exactly how to handle each type of question. The child will use
the answer sheet to fill in the circle of the correct letter for each question.
• When doing the actual practice test, read the instructions and questions exactly as they
are written. Do not paraphrase them.
• Give the child a break as needed – ideally, take a break between each Battery of three
practice subtests. In school, it is recommended that no more than one Battery of three
subtests tests be given in a single day. It is also suggested that teachers schedule both
a.m. and p.m. test periods and that they give students breaks between subtests given
during the same period. The goal is to not tire students out and to give them every
chance to do their best.
• Once the practice test starts, don’t give the child feedback or help during the practice
test unless they are confused about what to do. Go over answers after the test is over.
• At the end of each set of questions, give the child positive feedback for working so hard
and doing their best.

READ THIS FIRST
This is a full-length practice test in the same format and with the same number of questions
as the real test. Reading is not required for any of the subtests as the questions are entirely
picture-based, and instructions are given orally. To give the child a rehearsal for the actual
test, take them through each set of practice questions. We provide an instruction script to read
to the child for each question, just as the test publisher gives teachers an instruction script. For
the closest experience to the actual test, read the instructions to the child exactly as written –
this is how the test is administered. We recommend taking a short break after each Battery of
subtests.

Scoring
This practice test can only be scored on a percentage basis – the total number of correct
answers divided by the total number of questions asked (___ # correct/total number = ___%).
Use this practice test as a diagnostic to see how your child will do on each subtest. This
assessment is not meant to generate a projected score, as it has not been norm-referenced by
age and grade. The goal is to guide you in identifying your child’s strengths and weaknesses so
that you can work on skills needed for the real test. Plus, taking a practice test that mimics the
experience of taking the real test will help your child feel more secure and confident.

Verbal (Picture) Analogies
Practice Question
Before starting, say: “Let’s do a practice question. When you find your answer, fill in the bubble
of the picture that best answers the question.”
Say: “This big box has three pictures. We need to decide which answer picture goes in the
empty box.”
Say: “Look at the two pictures on top. In the top boxes, there are two objects, a heart, and a
lollipop. How are they related?” [Give your child time to answer.]
Say: “That’s right, they are both red. In the bottom box, we have a diamond shape. Now look at
the answer row to the side. Can you find an answer picture that goes with the diamond shape
in the same way the heart and the lollipop go together on top?” [Give your child time to
answer.]
Say: “That’s right! (or That’s not right.) You should have chosen the third bubble – the sweet
potatoes. The diamond shape and the sweet potatoes go together because they are the same
color. They are both orange and belong together in the same way.”

Sentence Completion
In the Sentence Completion subtest, a test administrator will read the question to the child.
The child should select the picture that best answers the question.
2 Practice Questions
Before starting, say: “I’m going to ask you a question. When I’m done, fill in the bubble on the
answer sheet that best answers the question. Listen carefully because I can only ask the
question once.”
Say: “Look at the pictures. Which one of these is a cup? Fill in the bubble on your answer
sheet.”
Say: “Do you know which one is a cup? [Give your child time to answer.] “Correct! We know
that a cup holds liquids and is something we drink from, so the third bubble is the best
answer.”
Say: “Let’s try another practice question. Look at the pictures. Which one of these grows in a
garden? Fill in the circle on your answer sheet.”
Say: “Do you know which one grows in a garden? [Give your child time to answer.] “Yes! We
know that a flower grows in a garden. A globe, a pacifier, and a drill do not. So, the picture of
the flower – the first bubble is the best answer.”

Verbal (Picture) Classification
Practice Question
Before starting, say: “Let’s do a practice question. When you find your answer, fill in the bubble
on the answer sheet for each question.”
Say: “Take a look at this picture. Do you see how all the pictures on top belong together
because there is something the same about them? What is the same about them that makes
them belong together?” [Give your child time to answer.]
Say: “That’s right. They are all things that you wear on our feet. Now look at the bottom row. Is
there a picture on the bottom that belongs with the pictures on top because it is also worn on
your feet?”[Give your child time to answer.]
Say: “That’s right! (or That’s not right.) You should have chosen the third bubble – boots
because they are worn on your feet, just like the pictures on top. Did you fill in the third
bubble?” [Give your child time to answer.] “Great job!”

Number Analogies
Practice Question
Instructions: Determine how the top two pictures are related. Figure out the rule they are
following. Then, choose the picture from the possible answers that will have the same
relationship with the picture on the bottom left.
Before starting, say: “Let’s do a practice question. Look at the two pictures on top. They are
related in some way to each other mathematically. The first box has 2 gifts. The second box has
3 gifts.”
Say: “How did we get from 2 gifts to 3 gifts?” [Give your child time to answer.]
Say: “That’s right! We added 1 gift. The second box has one more gift than the first box.”
Say: “Now look at the first bottom box. There is one pair of scissors. Look at the answer
choices. Do you see an answer that is related to the scissors in the same way the second box
above is related to the first box above?” [Give your child time to answer.]
Say: “Fill in the bubble that you think is the correct answer.” [Give your child time to answer.]
Say: “That’s right! The second answer above the bubble is correct. There is one more pair of
scissors than you see in the bottom box, just like there was one more gift in the second box on
the top than there was in the first box.”

Number Puzzles
2 Practice Questions
Instructions: What number replaces the question mark?
Before starting, say: “Let’s do a practice question. What number replaces the question mark?”
Say: “Both sides of the equal sign must total the same amount. The right side is 10. What
number do we need to add to 3 so that the left side equals 10?” [Give your child time to
answer.]
Say: “We must add 7 because 7 plus 3 equals 10. Now both sides of the equal sign total 10. Fill
in the circle under 7 to show that 7 is the correct answer.”
Say: “Let’s try another practice question. What number replaces the question mark?”
Say: “Both sides of the equal sign must total the same amount. The left side adds up to 8. What
number do we need to subtract from 12 so that the right side also equals 8?” [Give your child
time to answer.]
Say: “We must subtract 4 because 12 minus 4 equals 8. Now both side of the equal sign total 8.
Fill in the circle under the 4 to show that 4 is the correct answer.”

Practice Question
Instructions: Look at the abacus with one rod missing. Look at the first five rods and find a
pattern or rule. Choose the sixth rod that would continue to pattern or follow the rule in the
sixth place.
Before starting, say: “Let’s do a practice question.”
Say: “Look at the example. This is an abacus. The beads in the first five rods form a pattern or
follow a rule. The beads in the sixth rod are missing. Can you figure out the pattern or rule that
the first five rods follow?” [Give your child time to answer.]
Say: “That’s right! The pattern is 3, 2, 1, 3, 2, 1. Can you find the rod that has only one bead on
it? Fill in the bubble for that rod.” [Give your child time to answer.]
Say: “You are correct! The fourth rod over the bubble is the correct answer because it has only
one bead and completes the pattern of 3, 2, 1, 3, 2, 1.”

2 Practice Questions
Before starting, say: “Let’s do a practice question.”
Say: “Look at the first 3 pictures in the row. What is the same about them that makes them
belong together?” [Give your child time to answer.] “Can you see that it is the same figure that
has been rotated?”
Say: Which figure to the side belongs with the first 3 figures because it is the same figure that
has been rotated?” [Give your child time to answer.] “That’s right. The figure B is the same
figure, rotated, and it belongs with the first 3 figures.”
“Let’s do another one. Do you see how the first 3 figures in the row belong together because
something is the same about them? Choose the figure below them that also belongs with the
first 3 figures.”
“Look at the first 3 figures in the row. What is the same about them that makes them belong
together?” [Give your child time to answer.] “Can you see that they are all an arrow that’s one
