MODULE 8:

PRECALCULUS
INTRODUCTION

This module is about the importance of mathematics in

solving practical applications of mathematics through the study of
function.
LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of the section, you should be able to:

● Perform operations on functions;
● Perform operations on algebraic expressions;
● Solve linear and quadratic equations
SECTION 8.1: Functions

A function is a set of ordered pairs of numbers (x, y) in which no two

distinct ordered pairs have the same first number.
Notes:
● A function is a special type of relation.
● Every function is a relation but not every relation is a function.
● The domain of the function is the set consisting of all possible values of x, and
the range of the function is the set consisting of the resulting values of y.
● Because y is dependent on the choice of x, x denotes the independent
variable and y denotes the dependent variable.
● The notation f(x), called function value, is due to Leonard Euler.
There are three
ways of
representing a
function:
SECTION 8.2: OPERATIONS ON ALGEBRAIC EXPRESSIONS
SECTION 8.3: LINEAR AND QUADRATIC EQUATIONS IN ONE UNKNOWN
