― Installing
Fonts.
Firstly, you need to install the fonts on your computer before editing the template.
The fonts used are free and you will find the download links in the Download Links
file included in the zip file.
― Imagery.
All imagery is from Unsplash and can be used for free. You can use them for
commercial and noncommercial purposes.
You will find the link to access the images in the Download Links file.
― Opening the
InDesign file.
With the fonts installed, you can now open the main InDesign file by double
clicking the document with the extension .indd. The document is designed in
InDesign CC, but you can still open the file in earlier versions. The files ending in
.idml are for the versions of InDesign CS4, CS5, CS5.5 and CS6.
Open the file in CS4, CS5, CS5.5 or CS6.
If your software version is earlier than InDesign CC, locate
the files ending in .idml.
Right click the .idml file and select ‘Open with InDesign...’
Or through InDesign find your file: File > Open > Choose
.idml file.
The file will open in the desired version. Once open,
immediately save it with a new file name. You may need to
re-link the image files.
― Layers.
Texts, graphics and placeholder (images) are in different and labeled layers to
keep organized design. You can hide or show the layers to work more easily.
Simply click on the eye icon next to the layer you wish to
hide.
By clicking it again you will return it to its visible status.
― Spreads.
On the spread tab on your right you can easily duplicate, delete or change spreads
or pages order.
By right clicking on the spread of page you select, options
will display.
Now you can select the action you need.
By dragging and dropping you can change their order.
― Master Pages.
To edit the objects on the master pages, you need edit the layout of a master;
changes you make are automatically reflected on all pages with that master
applied.
Open the Pages panel (F12).
Double-click the icon for the master you want to edit.
The master spread appears in the document window.
Make changes to the master.
InDesign automatically updates any pages using that
master.
To edit/remove a master page item from a specific page in a doc try the following:
Hover over the item.
Hold Shift + CMD + Click and the item will unlock.
― Paragraph
Styles.
Every text style is saved as a paragraph style. This means you can change font by
style, rather than selecting every peice of text individually.
Highlight the text style you intend to change.
Open the Paragraph Styles dialogue box:
Window > Styles > Paragraph Styles
Double click the highlighted style in the Paragraph Styles
dialogue box.
In the left menu select ‘Basic Character Formats’.
Choose the desired font.
Click ‘OK’.
― Character
Styles.
Character styles are attributes that are only applied to ‘parts’ of the text, for
example: Bold or Italic. So it is easier to add character styles to sections of text
rather than a ‘whole’ formatting style.
Highlight the text style you intend to change.
Open the Character Styles dialogue box:
Window > Styles > Character Styles
Double click the highlighted style in the Character Styles
dialogue box.
Change or choose the desired style you want to add to the
font.
Click ‘OK’.
― Change colors using the
swatch palette.
You can globally change the colours of your templates in InDesign to keep with
your brand colours very simply, rather than going through and selecting each
coloured piece of text or object, follow the steps.
Open Swatch Palette:
Window > Colour > Swatches.
Double-click the swatch you wish to edit.
Adjust the colours accordingly.
Click ‘OK’.
All items with this color will change automatically to the
new color.
― Placeholder / Images.
Placeholder imagery is used in the template and can easily be changed. A
placeholder is basically a shape which will contain your image.
All imagery is supplied for Unsplash and can be used for free. You can use them
for commercial and noncommercial purposes.
To change or replace images follow the steps.
Drag and drop the image you need from your files into the
shape and it will appear inside it.
or
Open Links Palette: Window > Links.
Select the image on a page you wish to replace.
Go to ‘File > Place’, select the image of your choice and
click ‘OK’.
You can change the size by double-clicking until the red
frame appears. Or there are auto fitting options under
Object > Fitting
― Export as a PDF.
If you want to email to customers, the perfect file format to accomplish this task
is a PDF (Portable Document Format). This file is a compressed, widely accepted
file format that is easy to upload and email. Another bonus is that nothing in your
layout will change when viewed on a different computer.
To export follow these few steps.
Go to Menu > File > Export...
In the dialog box, rename and/or choose a place to save
your file. From the ‘Format’ drop-down menu select
‘Adobe PDF (Print)’.
In the next dialog box, from the Adobe PDF Preset drop-
down menu select either ‘Press Quality’ or ‘High Quality
Print’ if you intend to print out your PDF and ‘Smallest File
Size’ if you intend to email or upload to a website.
Press ‘Export’ and the PDF will be made in the background
in no more than a few seconds depending on your
computer and the complexity of the file.
