UNDERSTANDING
GRAPHIC DESIGN
AND LAYOUT
MODULE 5
WHEN YOU HEAR THE WORDS
GRAPHICS AND LAYOUT,
WHAT COMES TO YOUR MIND?
What makes a good website?
A website's success hinges on understanding its target audience,
identifying their needs, and communicating effectively through
design and layout. Different users have varying interests and goals,
influencing their behavior on the site. Web design is crucial, as it
determines whether users stay or go. A user-friendly design
enhances experience, while a visually appealing design captures
attention. First impressions matter, shaping users' perceptions of the
brand or message.
Graphic Design
Graphic design brings ideas to life through visual
storytelling, using a combination of text, images,
and colors to engage and communicate with
audiences.
Layout
Layout is the strategic arrangement of visual
elements to convey a message, guiding the
viewer's eye and creating a cohesive visual
experience
BASIC PRINCIPLES
OF DESIGN AND
LAYOUT
Balance
It refers to the proper arrangement of
the elements, which gives a visual weight
for the design. There are two types of
balance.
Symmetrical
Layout is the strategic arrangement of
visual elements to convey a message,
guiding the viewer's eye and creating a
cohesive visual experience.
It creates a sense of formality, order, and
stability. It can be very predictable and
sometimes perceived as static or boring.
Asymmetrical
Asymmetrical balance achieves balance
through the arrangement of dissimilar
elements that have equal visual weight.
It is often more dynamic, interesting, and
modern than symmetrical balance. It can
create a sense of movement and visual
intrigue.
Emphasis
When working on emphasis, you can change
the color, size, or even the element itself to
lead the eye to the focal interest.
Emphasis
Pattern, Repetition, Rhythm
The use of repetitive elements such as lines,
shapes, forms, textures, space, colors, font,
style, and the like to create texture, movement,
continuity, and consistency of the design. Make
the design formal and comfortable.
Pattern
A pattern is a more complex form of repetition,
where multiple design elements are combined
and repeated in a predictable arrangement.
They add visual interest and can be used to
create texture, depth, or a sense of movement
in a design.
Pattern
Repetition
Repetition is the simplest form, involving
the repeated use of a single design
element, such as a shape, color, or texture.
It can be used to create a sense of order,
consistency, and visual unity within a
design.
Repetition
Rhythm
Rhythm is the principle that creates a sense
of movement and visual flow by strategically
arranging elements with varying intervals.
It guides the viewer's eye through the design,
leading them from one point to another.
Rhythm
Alignment
refers to the proper placement of an element
to your design, just like invisibly placing or
aligning your texts or images diagonally,
vertically, and horizontally.
Hierarchy
Proper arrangement of the details such as
text, characters, numbers, and symbols.
Changing its character size, thickness, spaces,
or even font type to stand out is its most
critical features.
Hierarchy
Contrast
Combining different visual elements, like size, shape, color,
and texture, to create visual interest and emphasis. To avoid
overwhelming the design, balance contrasting elements and
choose colors that work well together. For readability,
ensure sufficient contrast between text and background,
using dark on light or light on dark.
Contrast
Unity and Harmony
It refers to the relationship of the elements or the
contents when you place them together. The elements of
the design must work together and agree to its meaning,
theme, feeling, or mood.
Unity and Harmony
These principles are essential for creating an effective
and engaging website that resonates with its target
audience. Users interact with websites in different ways,
depending on their interests and needs. Web design
plays a crucial role in determining whether they'll stay
on the site or leave. A well-designed website can grab
attention, convey the message, and build a lasting
impression.
