DIFFERENT STRATEGIES
Instruction: As a graduate school student, research strategies in
understanding the different kinds of students. Also, identify and analyze real-
life classroom situations that would best showcase these strategies.
1.) Know Yourself and Your Teaching Style
As teachers, we need to have an awareness of who we are, what
we value and our natural “default preferences.” It is recommended to
begin with a process of self-reflection. As we learn more about our own
tendencies, how they may have limited us in the past, and come to
understand the needs of our students, especially those who are different
from us, we naturally discover more tools to meet the challenges of
teaching.
Analyzation:
For example, we all know that in a classroom setting, there are
different types of teachers and uses different strategies in handling their
classes. With this principle, knowing yourself and your teaching style is I believe
the very first thing to consider to effectively deal and manage your students. In
my case, I always ask myself if I have been an effective teacher for my students.
We tend to forget that the most important instructional material/s in our everyday
lessons is ourselves. We should be cautious in everything that we do, we act
and we utter since we are the reflection of what kind of students we have in our
class. We are the image that they look up to and they will surely imitate what
they have seen in us.
As for me also, I believe that having different teaching style would
motivate students to attend and listen in our classes. They will not feel bored
along the way and making sure that I am relatable to them. I make sure that if
not all of them, at least half of my class have understood my lesson that I am
trying to relay to them. I also make sure that I have integrated values in my
teachings even if it is a short one because in the end, it is all about how they
will live their lives in the future base on the values that I/we instilled to them. It
may be tiring but if you have the passion for your students to learn and witness
how they improve; everything will be worthy. Having inculcated various
strategies in my lessons have made me realize how important it is to be
engaging to our students because it is the only way they will find their studies
interesting through the kind of teacher they have.
2.) Understand Your Student’s Learning Styles
Gain an understanding of each of your students’ learning styles
and needs and promote a community of learners, respectful of one
another’s strengths and differences.
Analyzation:
For this strategy, after understanding ourselves as teacher to our
students, it is also very important that we need to understand the individuality
of our students especially in their learning styles. In my case now, it is really
challenging for me to know each of my students especially that they are now 60
under my advisory but with this challenge, I find it also interesting in a way that
I could also experience such thing and will learn from it.
Knowing them based on their preference of their learning styles
might be a tough one but if you can have a good management through
strategies, it will not be impossible. I did try to get to know them by knowing their
likes, hobbies, favorites, and other important details about them that will give
me ideas on how to effectively deal with them. As days passed, they have been
enjoying their company with me even if they are that many. We learn, we play,
we sing, we laugh, we watch movies in our classes together and share
experiences that happened in our lives. With this kind of things, I have gained
their trust and confidence in me that is why also I feel that I have been effective
in my ways considering that in our bond inside and outside the classroom, there
is still that respect showed in our student-teacher relationship.
It is not also always that it goes smoothly everyday and there are
difficult days in our classroom knowing that we are just human and mistakes
happens. Sometimes but not most of the time, I tend to get angry because of
their doings and trying myself to be calm in disciplining them. They have
different behaviors to consider and I must prepare myself for such situations in
the classroom knowing that in my class, we are too many like a jungle.
3.) Supportive Strategies
Using teaching methodologies and strategies that promote the
maximum degree of success for students of all types/styles means we
must have well established pedagogical tools that are effective across
learning styles.
The simplest way to ensure a group of students with diverse
learning styles succeeds is to incorporate pedagogical practices that
promote cross-type success, and avoid practices that are ineffective,
regardless of type.
Analyzation:
For this strategy in understanding our students, being a supportive
tool to them and have support system strategies in their studies is also
important. Aside from our motivation and guidance as a show of our support to
them in their learning, we must need the materials that would help a lot to
succeed in their studies. It is very evident that in public school, there is a lack
of educational tools like books and other reading materials for our students. It
is very essential that we have these things especially in delivering our lessons
effectively to them.
In my case, as a classroom teacher I have utilized resources that I
could have to support that qualitative learning that I could have for my students.
One example that I did was to borrow old books from my former students in my
reading corner and even in our small library. They find it interesting to use those
materials especially storybooks with pictures that they read in their free time.
Another thing also is, with the emerging use of technology in learning for our
students, we also must let them experience the use of it knowing that not all of
them are expose to technology. In my class, the use of power point presentation
in my lessons is being used in our television where they can freely watch videos
clearly in our discussions. We are also lucky since our local government have
provided tablets for the grade-6 to utilize in their learning and able to let them
manipulate it inside the classroom. With all the kind of supports, I believe that
they can always learn even in the hardships in their lives, if they received it in
school, succeeding in learning is very possible and these students will soon
achieve their dreams in life.
4.) Teach Across Type
Be mindful and respectful of the needs of students on the other
side of each learning style dimension by understanding both sides and
offering strategies that meet the needs of students who work out of
opposing preferences. As we become more knowledgeable of our own
preferences, it is common to discover that it has been easier to teach in
ways that have worked better for the students on our same side of each
of the four-dimensional fences.
Analyzation:
This strategy of understanding our students in learning should
always be done especially if there is a need to do so in terms in giving them
qualitative learning. Aside from providing various teaching strategies to them,
knowing them further in their educational needs and identifies what aspect they
need more attention to, should also be considered. Students are unique and
different in nature especially in their ways of learning, that is why as a teacher,
we/I must be flexible in teaching them knowing that they have different needs.
In my class, reading is an evident problem that really needs a
special attention. Aside from the regular loads in my subjects, I also find time to
sit beside them and provide reading enhancements. In this simple way, at least,
I have given them something that could contribute to their improvements. With
me also, is our Reading Coordinator who gave the enhancements to our
students. We have this pull-out system in class for our reading program that
really helps our struggling readers to improve in this skill. As a way of providing
this need, with this program, we also tap our stakeholders especially the parents
to also share their support to this initiative for our students. Now, we are seeing
the implementation of this reading program as a good start in addressing this
specific needs of our children.
5.) Students Work to their Strengths
Providing opportunities for students to work in their strength’s
areas for some part of the overall learning experience enables us to best
reach all learners.
Analyzation:
This strategy of support to our students should be done by all
teachers. As the mentor and guardian of our students inside the classroom, we
witness the potentials that they have and they do better in those areas. They
have different fields to excel and what we can do to develop it is to give them
the support they need.
Just like in my class, I have seen that there are students who are
good at drawing/arts, writing, singing/music, dancing and in sports. That is why
whenever there are activities in school, I always told/motivate them to
participate and join whatever they like. For example, we are currently on our
preparation for our Division Meet and prior to that I encourage them to join and
have try-outs. And as you witness how they enjoy what they are doing, they are
not just learning but also, they are making fun in their journey inside the school.
Now, I have plenty of athletes in my class to participate in those upcoming
sports activities. Whether they are not that good in class, they are doing good
also in other fields like in sports and they deserve to have the kind of support
just like other students.
