SM Assignment 1

The assignment consists of various problems related to stress, deformation, and material properties in compound bars and tubes under axial loads. It includes calculations for stress in different segments, determining forces for equilibrium, and analyzing the effects of applied loads on materials like aluminum and brass. Additionally, it covers concepts such as normal and shear stress, stress-strain diagrams, and material moduli.

1) a) For the given compound bar in Figure 1, find stress in each segment if P = 10 kN. Also
determine the total axial deformation if E Al = 70 GPa, Est = 205 GPa and EBronze = 85 GPa.

Figure 1.

b) Find the force ‘P’ to be applied at ‘C’ for the compound bar shown in Figure 2 to satisfy
equilibrium. All the bars are circular.

c) A brass core is fit into a aluminum tube as shown in Figure 3. If P = 45 kN, find the
stresses in aluminum and brass. Take EAl = 70 GPa and EBr = 105 GPa.

2) a) Find the maximum load ‘P’ that can be safely applied so that the working stresses are not
exceeded for the given system in Figure 5.

b) A hollow steel tube with an inside diameter of 80 mm must carry an axial tensile load of 330
kN. Determine the smallest allowable outside diameter of the tube if the working stress is 110
MN/m2. (Hint: 1 MN = 106 N)

3) Find the displacement of ‘C’ if the bar AB was to remain flat (no tilting), assuming P = 50 kN.

4) a) A 100-mm-long rod has a diameter of 15 mm. If an axial tensile load of 10 kN is applied to

it (Figure 6), If, E = 70 GPa and v = 0.35, determine
(i) change in diameter, δd (ii) Modulus of rigidty, G (iii) Volumetric strain, ε v
(iv) Bulk modulus, k

5) a) Derive the expression for stress due to impact (freely dropped) load.
b) A weight of 1000 N falls through a height of 5mm before striking a collar attached to a bar
of 25 mm diameter and 3m long. Assuming E = 200 GN/m2, calculate the instantaneous
stress and strain.

6) a) Define normal and shear stress
