TYPES OF OBJECTS:
DIRECT OBJECT:
Definition: The thing directly affected by the verb.
Question trick: Ask “What?” or “Whom?” after the
verb.
Example: Shreya opened the door. (What did Shreya
open? → the door = Direct Object)
INDIRECT OBJECT:
Definition: Tells to whom or for whom the action is
done.
Question trick: Ask “To whom?” or “For whom?” after
the verb + direct object.
Example: She gave him a book. (Gave what? → a book
= Direct Object; Gave to whom? → him = Indirect
Object)
Both Together (Direct + Example 1:
She gave him a book.
Indirect Object):- ● What did she give? → a book (Direct Object)
● To whom did she give the book? → him (Indirect
ometimes a sentence can have both types of objects at Object)
the same time.
● The direct object receives the main action of the verb. Example 2:
The teacher taught the students a lesson.
● The indirect object tells to whom or for whom the
action is done. ● What was taught? → a lesson (Direct Object)
● To whom was it taught? → the students (Indirect
A simple way to see this: Object)
Subject + Verb + Indirect Object + Direct Object
So, both can appear in one sentence — the verb
first acts on the direct object, and then the indirect
object tells us who benefits or receives it.
