What you will learn
In this learning path, new developers are introduced to Progress OpenEdge
and its core concepts and tools, including the Progress OpenEdge Developer
Studio, the Progress Application Server for OpenEdge, the Progress
OpenEdge database, and the Progress OpenEdge Application Architecture.
You also learn about the Progress Advanced Business Language (ABL),
Progress Software’s proprietary language designed for developing business
applications. It is a high-level language that supports procedural, dynamic,
and object-oriented programming. You learn how to develop an OpenEdge
application using Progress Developer Studio for OpenEdge. You also learn
how to incrementally develop an application that utilizes OERA design
principles and how to write code using recognized best practices.
You learn to identify when and where to use datasets and then practice
incorporating datasets into applications during hands-on exercises using
Progress Developer Studio for OpenEdge. You learn how to define, populate,
and perform data operations using datasets and then share data with other
applications. You also learn how to use the object-oriented capabilities of
Progress OpenEdge ABL. You are introduced to key features of Progress’
object-oriented ABL, how to develop and test classes, and how to further
develop an application by applying object-oriented programming features
such as inheritance, interface classes, singletons, dynamic instances, and
events.
You can practice the concepts taught in each course with hands-on
exercises, complete with step-by-step guidance and solutions. You can
assess your knowledge with in-course Check Your Understanding questions.
You can also demonstrate your skills with assessment exams for key
courses.
Once you have mastered the competencies required of a Basic OpenEdge
Developer, you can earn your Basic OpenEdge 12 Developer certification by
passing the Basic OpenEdge Developer certification exam. The exam
consists of 225 multiple-choice questions. The exam is graded automatically
with 75% being the passing grade. Once you start the exam, you will have 4
hours to complete it. Once started, the exam cannot be paused and
continued at a later stage.
If you do not pass the exam, you can retake the exam again after a two-week
waiting period. You can attempt the exam five times in a 12-month period.
The certification is valid for two years, after which a re-certification is
required. An official certificate and a “Basic OpenEdge Developer” logo
acknowledging your expertise will be automatically made available for you
upon successfully passing the certification.
