ii. Find the angle of reflection.
iii. Find the angle between the incident and the reflected ray
iv. Find the angle between the reflected ray and the plane surface.
ANSWERS:
ASSIGNMENT 1
1. Why can't we see our image in the mirror in a completely dark room?
We can't see our image in a mirror in a completely dark room because there is no light to
reflect off our body and then off the mirror into our eyes.
2. If the moon is non-luminous, how does it appear bright at night?
The Moon appears bright at night because it reflects sunlight. Although it is non-luminous
and doesn't produce its own light, the Sun’s light bounces off its surface and reaches our
eyes.
3. Observe the picture given in figure:
A sheet of some material is placed at position P still the patch of light is obtained on
the screen. What is the type of material of this sheet?
Transparent sheet
4. Why can't we see the object through a T shaped or N shaped pipe?
We can't see objects through T-shaped or N-shaped pipes because light travels in a straight
line and cannot bend around the corners of these pipe shapes to reach our eyes.
5. Imagine you're watching a storm from your window. You see a flash of lightning—
but the thunder comes a few moments later. Why do your eyes "see the storm" before
your ears "hear it"?
We see lightning before we hear thunder during a storm because light travels much faster
than sound
ASSIGNMENT 2
6. Classify the objects or materials given below as opaque, transparent or translucent
and luminous or non-luminous.
Water, a sheet of aluminium, a mirror,a sheet of plane glass, fog, a piece of red hot
iron, sheet of cellophane, a wire mesh, firefly
Object/Material Opaque / Transparent / Luminous / Non-luminous
Translucent
Water Transparent Non-luminous
A sheet of aluminium Opaque Non-luminous
A mirror Opaque (reflective) Non-luminous
A sheet of plane glass Transparent Non-luminous
Fog Translucent Non-luminous
A piece of red hot iron Opaque Luminous
Sheet of cellophane Translucent Non-luminous
A wire mesh Opaque (partially open) Non-luminous
Firefly Opaque Luminous
7. You are given a transparent glass sheet. Suggest two ways to make it translucent
without breaking it.
We can convert transparent glass sheets into translucent glass sheets without breaking it in
following ways:
By applying oil, grease, butter or vaseline to make it partially permeable.
By making the surface of the glass rough by scrubbing it with sandpaper which allows the
light to pass partially.
8. Is the air around us always transparent? Discuss.
The air around us is usually transparent. This is the reason we can see the buildings and
trees around us. When the air gets polluted, and smoke and dust particles get mixed with
the air, the transparency of air decreases as the pollutant particles absorb light.
9. How can non-luminous bodies be made luminous?
Any non-luminous body can be made luminous by heating it. Take an iron wire and heat it
on a candle flame. After some time the iron wire will become red hot and start emitting
light.
10. A chef is preparing a dish to surprise his friend. It should not be seen clearly. What
kind of container should they use (transparent, translucent, or opaque), and why?
The chef should use a translucent container because it allows some light to pass through
but does not show the contents clearly. This keeps the dish a surprise while still giving a
hint of what’s inside.
ASSIGNMENT 3
11. If you're standing outside early in the morning facing the Sun, in which direction will
your shadow fall and why?
Shadow will fall towards the west because the Sun is in the east, and shadows always form on the
side opposite to the light source.
12. Correct the following statements given below:
(i) The colour of the object determines the colour of the shadow.
(ii) Transparent objects allow light to pass through them partially.
(i) The colour of the shadow of a given object does not depend on the colour of the object,
as the shadows are always dark.
(ii) Translucent objects are objects which allow light to pass through them partially, and
transparent objects allow light to pass through them completely.
13. Which of the following will not form a circular shadow:
Shoe box, A ball, A circular disk, Ice cream cone (horizontally).
Justify your answer.
Shoe box
Rectangular shape with sharp edges.
Shadow will have angular and straight lines, similar to the shape of the box.
Cannot form a circular shadow
14. A football match is being played at night in a stadium with flood lights ON. You can see
the shadow of a football kept at the ground but cannot see its shadow when it is kicked high
in the air. Explain.
We can see the shadow of football lying on the ground because the ground acts as a screen for it.
However, when the football is kicked high, the ground, which is acting as a screen, is away from
the football, hence no shadow of the football will be formed on the ground.
15. A torch is placed at two different positions A and B one by one as shown in fig.
The difference in ball shadow shapes (a) and (b) is due to the difference in the ball torch
positions A and B. The form of the shadow (a) is greater than that of the shadow (b) of the ball
only because the screen, the torch in position A and the ball are in the same straight line.
ASSIGNMENT 4
16. Why does a lunar eclipse always occur on a full moon day?
A lunar eclipse always occurs on a full moon day because that’s when the Moon is directly opposite
the Sun, with Earth in between. This alignment allows Earth's shadow to fall on the Moon, causing
an eclipse.
17. Draw a diagram to show the eclipse of the sun. Mark the areas where you can see
a. total solar eclipse. b.partial solar eclipse.
18. If the sun, the moon and the earth are in an arrangement as shown in fig. Which of these
would be the view seen from a place P on the earth?
Option B
19. Using a pinhole camera, a student observes the image of two of his friends, standing in
the sunlight, wearing yellow and red shirts, respectively. Comment on the colours of the
shirts in the image?
Pinhole camera doesn’t change the colour of the image. The colour of the shirt in the image
will remain the same as the colour of the object. Although the image of the person will be
inverted when seen through the pinhole camera.
20. You have 3 opaque strips with very small holes of different shapes as shown in Fig. If you
obtain an image of the sun on a wall through these holes, will the image formed by these holes
be the same or different?
A small circular image of the sun will be obtained in all the three cases irrespective of the shape
of the hole because the holes will act as a pinhole camera
ASSIGNMENT 5
21. Two plane mirrors are inclined to each other such that a ray of light incident on the
first mirror and parallel to the second is reflected from the second mirror parallel to the
first mirror. Find out the angle between the two mirrors. (JEE Mains)
Angle at Mirror 1+Angle at Mirror 2+Angle between mirrors=180
θ+θ+θ=180
3θ=180
θ=180/3
θ=60
22. A person is looking at the image of a tree in a mirror placed 3.5 m in front of him.
Given that the tree is 0.5 m behind his eyes. Find the distance between the image of the tree
and his eyes. What is needed to see an object?
Distance between the person and the mirror = 3.5 m
Distance between the person and tree (object) = 0.5 m.
The image formed in the mirror =4m
The distance between the image of the tree and his eyes = 4 + 3.5 = 7.5 m
23. A boy of height 1 m 45 cm is standing in front of a long mirror at a distance of 3 m.
From this information, fill up the following sentences:
a. The distance between the boy and his image is 6m.
b The height of the image is same.
c. When the boy moves 1m forward, the distance between the boy and his image is 4m.
24. If a ray of light falling on a plane mirror at an angle of 500 is formed, what will be the
angle of reflection?
Angle of incidence
∟i = 90° - 50°
∟i = 40°
According to laws of reflection,
∟i = ∟r
Angle of incidence = Angle of reflection
∟i = 40°
∴ ∟r = 40°
Angle of reflection ∟r = 40°
25. A light ray strikes a reflective plane surface at an angle of 43° with the plane surface.
i. Find the angle of incidence.
ii. Find the angle of reflection.
iii. Find the angle between the incident and the reflected ray
iv. Find the angle between the reflected ray and the plane surface.
Solution:
We use the diagram shown below to answer the questions.
a. Angle of incidence: i = 90 -43 = 47°
b. angle of reflection r = i = 47°
c. i + r = 47 + 47 = 94°
d. x = 90 - r = 90 - 47 = 43°
