1. Let W1 , W2 be two subspaces of a vector space V (F) and define W1 +W2 = {w1 +w2 | w1 ∈
W1 , w2 ∈ W2 }. Prove that W1 + W2 is a subspace of V (F). Also establish that it is the
smallest subspace of V (F) containing both W1 and W2 , where F = R or C.
2. A vector space

vectors from W1 and W2 .
3. Let W1 be the subspace of Mn×n (R) consisting of all the skew symmetric n × n matrices

4. Determine whether the following sets are subspaces of R3 (R) under the component wise
addition and scalar multiplication. Find W1 ∩W2 , where
W1 = {(a1 , a2 , a3 )∈ R3 : a1 = 3a2 and a3 = −a2 },

(a) f (x) = x, g(x) = |x|.
(b) f (x) = cos(x), g(x) = sin(x).
(c) f (x) = erx , g(x) = esx , for r 6= s and r, s ∈R.

R.

11. Let v1 = (a, b, c), v2 = (d, e, f ), v3 = (g, h, i) be any three vectors in R3 (R). Show
