GRADE IX PRACTICE ASSIGNMENT – Linear Equation in Two Variables

1. The solution of the linear equation x + 2y = 8 which represent a point on x- axis, is

(a) (4, 0) (b) (0, 4) (c) (8, 0) (d) (4, 2)
2. The autorikshaw fare in a city is charged @ Rs 10 for the first Km and @ Rs 4 per km for subsequent
distance covered. The linear equation to express the statement is
(a) y = 4x + 10 (b) y = 4x+ 6 (c) y + 4x = 10 (d) y + 4x = 6
3. If (4, 19) is a solution of the equation y = ax + 3, then a =
(a) 3 (b) 4 (c) 5 (d) 6
4. How many linear equations are satisfied by x = 2 and y = -3
(a) Only 1 (b) 2 (c) 3 (d) infinite
5. x = 2, y = -1 is a solution of linear equation
(a) x + 2y =0 (b) x + 2y = 4 (c) 2x + y = 0 (d) 2x + y = 5
6. The equation of x-axis is
(a) x = 0 (b) y = 0 (c) x = y (d) x + y = 0
7. Graph of x = 7 can never meet
(a) x – axis (b) y – axis (c) Origin (d) none of these
In each of the questions given below, there are two statements marked as Assertion (A) and
Reason (R). Mark your answer as per the options provided below:
(a) Both A and R are true and R is the correct explanation of A.
(b) Both A and R are true and R is not the correct explanation of A.
(c) A is true but R is false.
(d) A is false but R is true.
8. Assertion : Every point on x- axis represent a solution of the equation y = 0
Reason : Points on x- axis are of the form (k, 0), where k is a variable.
9. Assertion : The graph of the equation x =  5 is a line parallel to y- axis at a distance of 5 units to
the left of y- axis.
Reason : The line parallel to y- axis at a distance ‘a’ units to the left of y- axis is given by the
equation
x =  a.
10. How many lines of a linear equation in two variables can pass through point (0, 0)?
11. Find the point where the graph of linear equation 2x + 3y = 6 intersects y-axis.
12. Does the equation y + 2 = 3y  5 represent a line parallel to x- axis?
13. Write a linear equation representing a line which is parallel to y- axis and is at a distance of 2 units on
the left side of y- axis.
14. Write any four solutions of the linear equation ax – by = 2ab.
15. If (2, -3) is a solution of the equation yb = 7x – 26, then find the value of b. Find two more solutions of
the resulting equation.
16. Give the equations of two variables passing through (3, 12). How many more such lines are there?
17. Express y in terms of x, given  2x + y  7 = 0. Check whether the point (  3,  2) is solution of this
equation.
Case study based question:
Any equation of the form ax + by + c = 0, where a, b and c are real numbers and a  0, b  0 is known as a
linear equation in two variables.
One day Ram and Ankur go to a stationary shop to purchase some stationary. The shopkeeper tells them
that the cost of a notebook is 3 times of the cost of a pen.

18. Using the above information, answer the following questions:

1. If the cost of a notebook is Rs x and that of a pen is Rs y, then write the linear equation in two variables
to represent the given statement.
2. Write one solution of equation 2x  3y = 5.
3. If the cost of 1 notebook is Rs 15, then find the cost of 1 pen.
