Assignment # 1
Q1) Identify and highlight the possible factors of
diversity (surface level) in this case study. Also,
identify the factor and possible type of
discrimination.
Factors of Diversity (Surface Level):
Ethnicity:
Catherine Wu: Ethnically Chinese but American-
born and raised.
Nolan Bennett: White American.
Gender:
Catherine Wu is a woman, and her appointment
would add gender diversity to a predominantly male
Asia division.
-Nolan Bennett is a man.
Cultural Background and Experience:
Catherine has visited Asia for family and work but
has not lived there long-term.
Nolan has lived in China for over 15 years and is
deeply familiar with the culture, language, and
business landscape.
Language Proficiency:
Catherine speaks conversational Mandarin but
lacks fluency in reading and writing.
Nolan is fluent in Mandarin (speaking, reading,
and writing), which has strengthened his
relationships in the local business context.
Nationality and Perspective:
- Catherine’s American background and
experiences in the U.S. may bring a Western
perspective to Juno’s operations.
Nolan’s long-term residency in Asia and
experience working there provide a perspective
grounded in local business and cultural norms.
Types of Discrimination:
Ethnic and Racial Discrimination:
Catherine may face bias if considered "too
American" to effectively manage an Asian division,
while Nolan might experience preferential treatment
based on his long-standing relationships in the
region.
Gender Discrimination: Since Juno’s Asia
team is predominantly male, Catherine may face
implicit bias due to being one of the few women in a
leadership role in this context. Conversely, there
may be gender bias in choosing Nolan simply
because he fits the current team’s demographic
profile.
Cultural Discrimination: Given the differing
cultural perspectives and work experiences of each
candidate, there may be biases based on
assumptions about which cultural background would
best align with Juno’s goals in Asia.
Q2) According to your opinion which is the best
candidate for this job.
Best Choice:
Nolan for now, Catherine for future roles.
Why Nolan Might Be the Best Choice for Juno's
Asia Division.
1. He knows the region very well.
- Speaks fluent Mandarin.
- Understands local culture.
-Has many connections in the business
community.
2 he has hands on experience in China.
- Can build strong relationships with the local
team.
Nolan is the better fit for the Asia division right now
because of his local expertise. But Catherine would
be great for a future role that uses her strategic skills
and unique perspective. This would also help Juno's
diversity initiatives.
Nolan's Strengths:
- Knows Asia well
- Speaks Mandarin
- Has local business connections
- Hands-on experience in china.
