1.0 ABSTRACT
Mapping has gotten much better thanks to Geographic Information System (GIS)
technologies. ArcGIS software was used to create a database of the roads in Olomore village.
Satellite images were also used from Google Maps to make a digital street guide. This guide helps
people find their way around the village. It shows important places like churches, filling stations
etc. The goal is to make it easier for visitors to get around.

2.0 INTRODUCTION
The rise of digital technology and the internet has made people wonder how maps can be
shown differently from the usual paper versions. Maps made with Geographic Information
Systems (GIS) use digital tools to give us new ways to see the world. These advanced techniques
are possible because of recent improvements in digital technology. So, the question is whether
digital technology can also help us create maps in new ways for the digital world.
Over time, maps have become the best way to show how things are arranged on the Earth's
surface. Maps are spatial models of the earth’s surface or is a mathematically determine
presentation of a portion of the earth surface systematically plotted to scale upon a plane surface
(Endalew et al., 2019; Nnam et al., 2012). It plays a vital role in the world through aiding decision
making and policy formulation processes aiding tourism and general navigation (Nnam et al.,
2012).
Street maps, especially, have proven very helpful in guiding people through places they
don't know. This shows that maps and finding directions go hand in hand. A street guide map is a
picture of a town or city that shows all the streets, big and small, along with highways, roads,
railways, and other important places (Chiang et al., 2014; Jorda et al., 2021). It's a type of map that
focuses on roads and transportation routes. People use street maps to find specific addresses and
streets, navigate while driving, plan trips, figure out driving directions, and decide where to put
things like stores and services (Udoh & Igbokwe, 2014).
2.1 PROJECT LOCATION
The project site is located at Olomore Village, Abeokuta with the geographical coordinate of
7.1485°N, 3.3509°E

2.2 PERIOD OF EXECUTION

The project was conducted from March 19th to March 20th, 2024.

2.3 SIZE PROJECT

The project area was 1km x 1km.

2.4 ORDER OF THE SURVEY WORK

The project was of third (3rd) Order because it used information from Google satellites.

2.5 AIM OF THE PROJECT

The aim of this project is to create a street guide map for my family's house located in Olomore
Village, Abeokuta, Nigeria.

2.6 OBJECTIVES
- To obtain satellite imagery through Google Earth covering the study area
- Digitize features on the satellite imagery
- Create a digital map with layout, symbols, generalization, and labeling
- Produce the Street Guide Map of Olomore Village.

3.0 METHODOLOGY
3.1 SOFTWARE USED
- ArcMap
- Universal Maps Downloader
- Google Earth Pro
- Bbbike Extract

3.2 DATA ACQUISITION

Initially, satellite imagery of the desired area was acquired from Google Earth using the Universal
Map Downloader Software. Following this, the area's boundaries were defined by measuring a
length and breadth of 1km each utilizing the "add path" feature. Using "add placemark," the upper
right and lower right corners were marked, and their coordinates were extracted from Google
Earth. These coordinates were then inputted into the left and right coordinate spaces within the
Universal Map Downloader software.

Subsequently, the Google satellite map was chosen, with the zoom level set to 18, and the
download destination folder was specified before the download process was initiated by clicking
the start button. After the download, the .umd file was merged into TIFF and JPEG formats using
combiner tools, resulting in georeferenced satellite imagery in the WGS 84 coordinate system.

Various features such as schools, churches, etc., were identified and marked on Google Earth, then
saved as “places” in KML format. To ensure accuracy, the locations of these features were verified
by checking the street view via Google Maps. The road data were acquired from BB Bike Extract,
a website offering pre-digitized building and road information, available for free, although
unfortunately I couldn’t get building data for my area.

3.3 HOW THE DATA ACQUIRED WAS USED
First, the coordinate system was configured to WGS84 within the ArcGIS software. Subsequently,
the geo-tiff image of the study area was imported, alongside the shapefiles containing road data
downloaded and extracted from Bbbike Extract.

Figure 1.4: Imported geo-tiff image of the study area (i.e. road data)

A new polygon shapefile in rectangular form was generated to define the study area's boundary.
This boundary, presented in vector format, will aid in Geoprocessing tasks.

The roads were clipped to the boundary by using the clip tool in geoprocessing box

Due to the absence of digitized buildings, I proceeded to adding locations of specific places.
Features saved as KML files from Google Earth were incorporated using the "KML to Layer" tool,
with the KML file serving as the input feature. These features were then extracted and categorized
accordingly. For instance, all churches were selected, extracted, and placed into a new layer, and
the same process was followed for filling stations, etc. Following classification, appropriate icons
were assigned to represent these features, and labeling was completed.

DATA PRESENTATION
Below is the final street guide map produced

4.0 PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED

Buildings in my area have not been digitized. Additionally, some locations on Google Maps no
longer exist

5.0 CONCLUSION
This study aimed to create a street guide map for Olomore village in Abeokuta, Ogun State. The
map provides a detailed and up-to-date view of the area, displaying roads, schools, filling stations,
churches, hotels, and more. This map will help visitors and users of all kinds find locations and
navigate the area effortlessly. It serves as a visual guide to aid people, especially first-time visitors,
in finding their way around the area.

6.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
Recognizing the significance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) in managing spatial data
and its attributes, the following are my recommendations:
- Regular updates should be conducted to ensure that the street guide reflects the current
status of the area.
- Use the street guide as a starting point for any future mapping work in the area.
- The government should make more people aware of using geospatial technology for
mapping. This includes keeping track of the area's changes and keeping a record of the
road networks and buildings
