ASSIGNMENT 1
Chemistry
SUBMISSION DATE: 29 August 2025
MARKS: 50 MARKS (5 marks each)
Q1. Explain, with diagrams, the arrangement and movement of particles in solids,
liquids, and gases. How does kinetic energy vary between these states?
Q2. Describe how Brownian motion provides evidence for the particulate nature of
matter. Include an example of an experiment that demonstrates it.
2. Experimental Techniques
Q3. You are given a mixture of sand, salt, and iron filings. Outline the experimental
steps (with justification) to separate and obtain each component in pure form.
Q4. A student needs to purify an impure sample of copper(II) sulfate crystals
contaminated with sodium chloride. Describe the experimental technique(s) to
achieve this and explain the principle behind it.
3. Atoms, Elements and Compounds
Q5. Isotopes of carbon are 12C, 13C, and 14C.
(a) State the number of protons, neutrons, and electrons in each isotope.
(b) Explain why they have similar chemical properties but different physical
properties.
Q6. Magnesium reacts with oxygen to form magnesium oxide. Write a balanced
chemical equation and describe the type of bonding present in the product.
4. Stoichiometry
Q7. Calcium carbonate reacts with hydrochloric acid according to the equation:
CaCO3+2HCl→CaCl2+CO2+H2O
If 25.0 g of CaCO₃ reacts completely, calculate:
(a) The number of moles of CaCO₃ used.
(b) The volume of CO₂ produced at room temperature and pressure (RTP).
Q8. Ammonia can be synthesized from nitrogen and hydrogen:
N2+3H2→2NH3
If 30 g of nitrogen reacts with excess hydrogen, calculate the mass of ammonia
formed. (Molar mass of N₂ = 28 g/mol, NH₃ = 17 g/mol)
5. Electricity and Chemistry
Q9. Explain what happens at the anode and cathode during the electrolysis of molten
sodium chloride. Include the half-equations for each electrode.
Q10. A dilute copper(II) sulfate solution is electrolyzed using copper electrodes.
Describe how the masses of the anode and cathode change during electrolysis, and
explain the role of the copper ions in solution.
