Submission Date: 01 September, 2025
Instructions:
a) Use A4 Sheet(s) for submitting the Assignment.
b) Write the Question number clearly, before solving the problem.
c) Write the solution neat and clear with the diagram, if any.
d) Evaluation will be done on the submission date.
e) Late submission of the Assignment will not be entertained.
Solve all the problems given below in the specified order.
1. Proof that 1 poise = 0.1 N-s/m². If shear stress is 0.3 N/m² and velocity gradient is 0.2 s⁻¹ for a liquid with
specific gravity 0.9, find the kinematic viscosity of the liquid.
2. A fluid at 15oC has a specific gravity of 1.2 and a kinematic viscosity of 1.5 centistoke. Determine its (i)
specific weight and (ii) dynamic viscosity in Pa-s.
3. The space between two parallel plates kept 1 mm apart is filled with a gel of dynamic viscosity 0.3 Pa·s.
What is the shear stress on the lower fixed plate if the upper one is moved with a velocity of 0.5 m/s?
4. The velocity distribution in a viscous flow over a plate is given by u = 3y –0.5 y2 for y<=4m, where u is
velocity in m/s at a point distant y from the plate. If the coefficient of dynamic viscosity is 0.8 Pa-s.
determine the shear stress at y =2 and at y=4.0 m.
5. A thin plate is placed between two flat surfaces 7 cm apart such that the viscosity of liquids on the top and
bottom of the plate are µ1=0.6Pa.sec and µ2= 1.4Pa.sec respectively. Determine the position of thin plate
such that the viscous resistance to uniform motion of the thin plate is minimum.
6. A cylindrical shaft of 100 mm diameter rotates about a vertical axis inside a fixed cylindrical tube of length
70 cm and 105 mm internal diameter. If the space between the tube and the shaft is filled by a lubricant of
dynamic viscosity 3.0 poise, determine the power required to overcome viscous resistance when the shaft
is rotated at a speed of 180 rpm.
7. Two coaxial cylinders, 8 cm and 7.8 cm in diameter and 5 cm high, have both their ends open and are
filled with a viscous liquid. A torque of 0.5 N·m is produced on the inner cylinder when the outer cylinder
rotates at 180 rpm. Determine the coefficient of viscosity of the liquid.
8. (a) If the surface tension at the air-water interface is 0.072 N/m, what is the pressure difference between
the inside and outside of a water droplet with a diameter of 0.02 mm? (b) If the surface tension at the soap-
air interface is 0.080 N/m, what is the pressure difference between the inside and outside of a soap bubble
with a diameter of 5 cm?
9. A capillary tube with an internal diameter of 4 mm is dipped into a liquid with a surface tension of 0.45
N/m. The angle of contact is 110°. The density of the liquid is 11000 kg/m³. Find the height of the liquid
column in the tube relative to the free surface.
