Lecture 10: Globalization and Internationalization of
Philippine Education
The Global Context of Education
Education today is no longer confined within national borders. Globalization has created
a world where students, teachers, and ideas move fluidly across countries. For the
Philippines, this means adapting its education system to meet international standards
while also promoting local identity.
ASEAN Integration and the Philippines
The Philippines is part of the ASEAN Economic Community, which emphasizes regional
cooperation in education. This includes student mobility programs, credit transfer
systems, and recognition of qualifications across member states. The K-12 reform was
partly motivated by the need to align with ASEAN standards, ensuring that Filipino
graduates are recognized and competitive across Southeast Asia.
International Student Mobility
Many Filipinos pursue studies abroad, while the Philippines also hosts foreign students in
areas such as medicine and aviation. Internationalization promotes cultural exchange,
research collaboration, and global citizenship. However, it also contributes to brain drain
when Filipino graduates choose to settle overseas rather than return to serve locally.
Role of English and Multilingualism
The Philippines’ strong foundation in English makes it competitive globally, especially in
fields like business process outsourcing (BPO). However, the challenge lies in balancing
global communication with the preservation of Filipino and regional languages.
Multilingualism must be seen not as a weakness but as a strength that enriches identity
and inclusivity.
Toward a Globally Competitive but Locally Grounded Education
The ultimate goal is to build a system that is globally competitive but rooted in Filipino
culture and values. Research, innovation, and partnerships with international universities
must be promoted, but not at the expense of cultural identity. A truly internationalized
education system is one that equips students to thrive in the global arena while remaining
committed to national development.
