Pre-Assessment Questions:
Good Morning Class! How are you all?
Before coming towards today’s lecture, I want you to answer me a few questions.
What is a binomial expression?
Is this expression binomial or trinomial? x2 – 4
What is the degree of this polynomial? 7x3
Can you simplify this expression? 3(x+2)
What is the GCF (Greatest Common Factor) between 24 and 36?
Discussion of the Topic:
So, you all are able to simplify simple linear expression. However, we also need to
deal with complex algebraic expression, involving higher degree of polynomial.
So, basically this process of breaking down a complex expression into its
constituents parts, which are easy to work with and analyze is called factorization.
The constituent parts obtained as a result are called as factors of the main
expression. Factorization will not only make complex equations simple, but will
provide roots or solutions of the equation, and will cancel or eliminate the common
factor also.
This will make algebra a fun game. Let’s have this fun game by starting with the
factorization of binomial algebraic expression.
Factorization of Linear Binomial Algebric Expression:
Let’s deal with the factorization of a linear binomial expression by taking an
example of 3x+9.In such a case, we simply take out a common multiple or we call
it ‘Greatest Common Factor’ (GCF) out of both terms. In our example, we can
take out 3 as a common, as it is the greatest common multiple of both the
‘variables’ of our expression.
As we know, we always assume an algebraic expression equivalent to zero
3x + 9 = 0
3(x+3) = 0 (x+3) is the factor of the given expression
Factorization of Quadratic Binomial Algebric Expression:
If degree of one polynomial in our equation is 2 i.e. equation is quadratic with two
polynomials, its factorization is carried out in the above similar method. We again
have to find out the greatest common multiple from both the variables of both
terms of the equation.
For example, if we have to factorize 4x2 + 8, we can see 4 is the greatest possible
common multiple from both variables 4 and 8, so..
4x2 + 8 = 0
4(x2 + 2) = 0 (x2 + 2) is the factor of the given expression.
Any question till now?
Factorization of Quadratic Trinomial Algebric Expression:
Here comes the main twist! Now we have to deal with a trinomial expression,
involving a term with second degree of polynomial. For instance , x2 + 7x + 10.In
such a scenario, we have to breakdown the central term in such a manner that both
the parts of the central term
When added, make the central linear term
When multiplied, makes the product of other two terms i.e. the quadratic
one, and the real number without any variable
Let’s breakdown the central term in our concerned example. The central term is 7x,
while the product of other two terms is 10x2. So, 5x and 2x are two components of
7x that enable us to factorize. As,
When added, its 7x…the central linear term
When multiplied, its 10x2…the product of other two terms
So, x2 + 7x + 10 = 0
x2 + 5x + 2x + 10 = 0
After breaking down the central term, a common term is taken out from first two
terms and similarly a common term is taken out from other two terms.
x2 + 5x + 2x + 10 = 0
x ( x + 5) + 2 ( x + 5) = 0
( x + 2) ( x + 5) = 0
(x + 2) being the common factor is taken out once, making (x + 2) ( x + 5) the
factors of the concerned equations. A trick to validate our answer is to multiply the
factors obtained. If the answer comes out to be the original equation, our answer is
right.
SMALL TRICK TO BREAK CENTRAL TERM INTO TWO
COMPONENTS:
Multiply the coefficient of quadratic term and the constant term, the factorize the
coefficient of the product. The factors obtained can give a hint of suitable two
numbers to breakdown the central term.
Have you understood the concept? Any question?
Recap of the Discussion:
Factorization is basically eliminating the common factor from all terms first, then
finding the constituent parts, which multiply to give the original expression. This
makes algebraic expression easy to work on.
Post-Assessment Questions:
Now, it’s your turn to solve a few questions. Let’s solve these questions together in
the class:
1. x2 + 2x – 8 Answer: (x + 4) (x – 2)
2. 6xy – 14yz Answer: (x + 6) (x + 3)
3. x2 + 9x + 18 Answer: 2y (3x – 7z)
4. x2 + 3x – 40 Answer: (x + 8) (x – 5)
Homework:
As I am confident now that you have grasped the concept of factorization, now you
have to solve these questions as homework; If you face any difficulty, we can sort
it out tomorrow.
1. x2 + 3x – 10 Answer: (x + 5) (x – 2)
2. 30x4 – 45x2y Answer: 15x2 (2x2 – 3y)
3. 2x2 + x – 3 Answer: (x – 1) (2x + 3)
4. 4x2 + 8x + 3 Answer: (2x + 1) (2x + 3)
5. 2y2 – 3y – 5 Answer: (y + 1) (2y – 5)
See you tomorrow. Good bye!
