LEGO Mindstorms EV3 Line Follower Robot - Step-by-Step Build Guide

Step 1: Base Frame

Start with a flat, sturdy EV3 base using standard Technic beams. This lowers center of gravity for

better stability on tight curves.

Step 2: Large Motors (Drive)

Mount the two large motors symmetrically on the left and right rear sides of the base. These provide

strong torque and speed.

Step 3: Wheels

Attach medium-size rubber wheels to both large motors. Ensure both are level and rotate freely. Use

plastic rollers or a third wheel for balance.

Step 4: Front Color Sensors (S1 & S4)

Mount two color sensors (facing downward) 1 cm above ground, spaced ~6.5 cm apart. These are

the main left/right line followers.

Step 5: Outer Color Sensors (S2 & S3)

Mount two more color sensors slightly behind and wider apart than S1 & S4 (~10-12 cm apart).

These detect large curve deviations.

Step 6: EV3 Brick

Place the EV3 brick centrally for balanced weight distribution. Make sure the ports face outward for

cable management.

Step 7: Cable Management

Use clips or beams to secure cables to avoid dragging or tangling during turns.

Step 8: Calibration Touchpoint

Leave space for potential button/touch sensor if calibration is required pre-run.

Final Checks
Ensure all wheels are aligned, sensors are firmly mounted, and robot width is within 30x30 cm. Run

test to adjust height if black line is not detected clearly.
