Personal Health Issues and Concerns; Self-management Skills
1. Height and weight Issue (stunted growth, underweight, overweight, obesity)
● Underweight - means a person has a body weight that is considered too low to
be healthy that I determined using the BMI.
● Stunted growth – refers to a condition where a child is short for their age due
to chronic malnutrition, repeated infections, or poor health during early life.
● Overweight – means having more body weight than is considered healthy for
a certain height.
● Obesity – a condition where a person has excess body fat that may harm their
health.
2. Common ear Problems (impacted cerumen, otitis media, otitis externa
● Impacted cerumen - is when earwax (cerumen) builds up in the ear and
blocks the ear canal;
● Otitis externa - also known as swimmer's ear, is an inflammation of the ear
canal.
● Otitis media - is a group of inflammatory diseases of the middle ear.
3. Common Skin Problems (sunburn, dandruff, corns, blisters, calluses)
● Sunburn - is a form of radiation burn that affects living tissue, such as skin,
that results from an overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation, commonly
from the sun.
● Corns - an in growing callus often on the foot.
● Blisters - is a small pocket of body fluid (lymph, serum, plasma, blood, or pus)
within the upper layers of the skin.
● Dandruff - is a common chronic scalp condition marked by flaking of the skin
on your scalp.
● Calluses - a thickened and hardened part of the skin or soft tissue, especially
in an area that has been subjected to friction.
● Ingrown Toenails - often due to improper nail cutting
4. Common Oral and Dental Problems (cavities, gingivitis, halitosis, periodontitis,
malocclusions)
● Cavities – tooth decay
● Gingivitis – inflammation of the gums
● Halitosis – bad breath
● Periodontitis – inflammation of tissue around the teeth.
5. Common Eye Problem
● Astigmatism – images are distorted because of the cornea (the clear
outermost layer of the eye) or a lens that is not evenly or smoothly curved.
● Myopia (Nearsightedness) – a condition in which one can see close objects
clearly but objects farther away may appear blurry.
● Conjunctivitis - (sore eyes) – a common eye infection caused by bacteria or
virus.
● STRABISMUS - also called crossed eyes is a condition in which the eyes do
not properly align with each other when looking at an object.
● Xerophthalmia: abnormal dryness of the eyes. Vitamin A deficiency, primarily
affects children.
POSTURE AND SPINE DISORDERS
● Scoliosis - Sideways curvature of the spine
● Lordosis (swayback) - Excessive inward curve of the lower back.
● Kyphosis (hunchback) - extreme forward curvature of the upper spine
