the lead internal verifier. Only ONE resubmission is possible per assignment, providing:
The trainee has met initial deadlines set in the assignment, or has met the agreed deadline extension.
The trainer considers that the trainee will be able to provide improved evidence without further guidance.
Evidence submitted for assessment has been authenticated and accompanied by a signed and dated
declaration of authenticity by the trainee and assessor.
Any resubmission evidence MUST be submitted within 10 working days of receipt of results of assessment.

Assignment brief
Q1
A flat metal plate is acted by four forces. The plate is in static equilibrium.
Calculate:
i. the horizontal component of 120 N force
ii. the vertical component of 80 N force
iii. the equilibrant force which makes the plate in
equilibrium.
iv. the angle θ of the line of action of the
equilibrant force

Q2
A rectangular steel bar 10 mm ×16 mm × 200 mm long extends by 0.12 mm
under a tensile force of 20 kN. Find:
i. the stress
ii. the strain
iii. the elastic modulus of the bar material
Q3
a) A diagram representing a portion of an amusement park ride is shown below. A
100kg car is launched with an initial velocity of
10 m/s at point A. It moves down a frictionless track and comes to a stop at point
D. Calculate :
i. the potential energy of the car at point A.
ii. the kinetic energy of the car immediately after it is launched
iii. the velocity of the car as it passes point B on the ride
iv. the velocity of the car as it passes point C on the ride
b) A racing car travels on a circular track of radius 600 mm. Suppose the car moves
with a constant linear speed of 18 m/s. Calculate :

i. the car wheel angular speed.
ii. the magnitude and direction of its acceleration
Q4
A lock gate is 8 m wide separated water at a depth of 4 m acting on one side and
fuel at depth of 10 m acting on the other side as shown in figure. Taking the relative
density of fuel as 780. Determine
i. the density of the fuel
ii. the overturning moment due to the water
iii. the overturning moment due to the fuel
iv. the resultant overturning moment.
Q5
A small block of mass 100 kg is pulled up from rest by a force 2kN as shown. If the
angle is 15 ° and height of the slope is 1.5 m so find:
i. the coefficient of friction between the block and the slope
Page 6 of 7
ii. the work done by the force.
Q6
The input power by a machine is 100 W to lift the block to the top of the incline in
previous question in 50 s. Calculate
i. The loss power due to friction
ii. The efficiency of the pulley system
iii. What is the actual mechanical advantage of a pulley system? And explain the
effect in efficiency when you have more pulleys.
Q7
In the wind tunnel shown below, the air passes through a converging duct just prior
to the working section. The air velocity entering the converging duct is 25 m/s and
the duct has a cross-sectional area of 0.3 m 2. If the speed of flow in the working
section 75m/s, calculate the cross sectional area of the working section. Assume the
air to be incompressible.
