Exploring Sustainable Transport Systems
( Metro and Bus Services )
Introduction
Many of the world's biggest cities are facing huge problems with transport. There are too many cars, which
causes bad traffic jams that waste a lot of time and fuel. This also leads to dirty air, which is harmful for
people's health, and noisy streets that make it hard to live comfortably. On top of that, owning and running
a car is very expensive for most families. A major challenge is making sure everyone can get around easily,
no matter where they live in the city or if they have a disability. This report explores how good public
transport, like the metro and bus, can solve these problems and create a better city for everyone.
This study focuses on how important public transport is for a city's life. Good transport does more than just
move people from one place to another; it helps build a strong and connected community. It gives people a
reliable and affordable way to travel to work, school, and healthcare, which helps the whole city's economy
grow. When people can easily reach jobs and education, they become more productive. Public transport
also helps reduce social isolation, as it allows people to visit family and friends and take part in community
activities. This is especially true for students, the elderly, and people with disabilities who might not have
other ways to get around. By offering a cheap and efficient way to travel, public transport can help families
save a lot of money they would otherwise spend on cars.
Our report is guided by two important global goals from the United Nations. The first is SDG 9: Industry,
Innovation, and Infrastructure, which is about building and keeping up modern and strong transport
systems. This means using new technology, like apps for tickets, and making sure the transport network
can handle heavy use and unexpected problems. The second is SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and
Communities, which focuses on making cities safe, welcoming, and inclusive for everyone. Good public
transport helps achieve this by reducing pollution, making our streets safer, and giving everyone equal
access to the city’s resources.
To get a full picture, this report will look at the good parts and the difficult parts of our city’s public
transport. We collected information by visiting metro stations and bus stops, and by talking to at least 10
different passengers. We asked them about their experiences, how safe they felt, and whether the transport
was easy to use. We also looked at how the transport helps people with disabilities. Our findings will show
how these services are working today. In the end, we will provide a clear conclusion and offer important
suggestions to make our public transport systems more modern, sustainable, and useful for everyone. This
way, our city can keep growing in a smart and healthy way.
Methadology
This section explains the step-by-step process we followed to gather information for our report. Our main
goal was to understand the social and economic impact of our city's metro and bus services and see how
they are helping to achieve the goals of sustainable city development. We used a clear and organized
approach to make sure our findings were fair and reliable.
1
First, our team chose one major metro station and one main bus terminal to visit. These locations were
picked because they are very busy and serve a lot of different people from various parts of the city. We
decided on specific roles for each member of our team to work effectively. One person was the interviewer,
who was responsible for talking to passengers and asking questions. Another person was the recorder, who
wrote down all the answers and important notes during the interviews. A third person was the
photographer, who took pictures to show the conditions of the stations and buses and to document what
we observed.
To collect information, we spent time at both locations and made detailed observations. We looked at things
like the general cleanliness of the platforms and buses, the condition of the seating areas, and how easy it
was to find information. We also paid close attention to accessibility features for people with disabilities,
such as ramps, lifts, and special seating areas. Our main activity was conducting short interviews with at
least 10 different passengers. We used a simple questionnaire to guide our conversations, which helped us
get consistent feedback on several key topics. These topics included how safe passengers felt, whether the
fares were affordable, how clean the services were, and how well the transport system accommodated
people with special needs.
In addition to the interviews, we took photos to support our written observations. These pictures provide
visual proof of what we saw, from the cleanliness of the stations to the availability of ramps. By combining
these different methods—direct observation, interviews with a set of questions, and photos—we were able
to collect a wide range of data. This careful process allowed us to get a complete and balanced picture of
our city’s public transport systems and their real impact on the community.
Result and Observations
During our field research at the metro station and bus terminal, we were able to collect a lot of useful
information from our direct observations and by talking to passengers. Our goal was to understand the
real-life experience of using public transport and find out what people think about it. We interviewed a total
of 15 passengers, including students, office workers, and elderly citizens, to get a wide range of feedback.
We also took detailed notes on what we saw, paying attention to the condition of the transport and the
stations themselves.
We found that the public transport system has several clear advantages. Most of the passengers we spoke
to agreed that both the metro and bus services are very affordable. One student mentioned that without
the bus service, it would be almost impossible for them to afford to get to their college every day. Another
major advantage is efficiency. An office worker said that the metro saves them over an hour of travel time
each day, avoiding the city's heavy traffic. This speed and reliability make it a very attractive option for
people who need to get around quickly. We also observed that the metro system is very well-planned,
connecting different parts of the city smoothly.
However, our observations and interviews also highlighted some important disadvantages and challenges.
The most common complaint was overcrowding, especially during the morning and evening rush hours.
The metro trains and buses often become so full that it's difficult to get on or off, and people feel unsafe.
We also found some issues with cleanliness. While some stations were clean, a few others had litter on the
platforms and in the waiting areas. The buses, especially later in the day, were sometimes not as clean as
they could be. The third major challenge we identified was with accessibility. We observed that while ramps
2
and lifts for people with disabilities are in place at the metro station, some of them were not working. A
passenger in a wheelchair explained that they often have to wait for help from staff, and sometimes the lifts
are out of service for several days. This makes it very difficult for them to use the transport system
independently.
In summary, the passenger feedback and our observations show that the public transport system is highly
valued for its affordability and efficiency, which are major benefits for the community. But at the same time,
improvements are needed in areas like overcrowding, cleanliness, and, most importantly, ensuring that all
accessibility features are always working for every person.
Analysis and SDG Connection
This section analyzes how our city's public transport systems support sustainable development and
innovation, based on our observations and passenger feedback. The findings show a clear link between
modern transport infrastructure and the achievement of key Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs),
especially SDG 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure and SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and
Communities. By providing efficient and reliable services, our transport system is a major driver of city
development.
Our research found several key advantages that support this: - Most passengers agreed that the metro and
bus systems significantly improve mobility, making it easy to travel long distances in a short amount of
time. This saves people a lot of time and makes the city feel more connected. - A major advantage
highlighted by many was the affordability of public transport compared to the high cost of fuel and car
maintenance. This economic benefit helps people save money and is a key factor in improving their quality
of life. - From an environmental perspective, by reducing the number of private vehicles on the road, the
transport system helps lower traffic jams and air pollution, which directly contributes to creating a healthier
and more sustainable urban environment (SDG 11).
However, our analysis also identified several disadvantages and challenges that need to be addressed:
While accessibility features like ramps and lifts are present, some passengers with disabilities reported that
these features are not always working properly or are difficult to use. This shows a gap in achieving full
inclusivity. - We observed some issues with cleanliness at a few of the stations and on some buses, which
can negatively affect the passenger experience. - Overcrowding, especially during rush hours, can make the
journey uncomfortable and raise safety concerns for some users.
In conclusion, the transport infrastructure in our city is a good example of how innovation (SDG 9) can lead
to sustainable city development (SDG 11). The system successfully provides affordable and fast transport,
supporting the city's economy and reducing environmental harm. However, the identified disadvantages,
such as problems with accessibility and overcrowding, show that there is still room for improvement to
ensure that the system is truly inclusive, safe, and of high quality for all citizens.
3
Conclusion
Our report found that the city's public transport system is a powerful force for good, playing a key role in
improving people's lives and supporting sustainable city development. The system offers an affordable and
efficient way for citizens to travel, which helps the economy and reduces pollution from private cars. This
clearly shows our city is making good progress toward achieving global goals for sustainable cities and
modern infrastructure.
However, our findings also show there are important areas that need attention. Issues with cleanliness,
overcrowding, and broken accessibility features are making the experience difficult for some passengers.
Recommendations: - Improve Maintenance: Conduct regular and immediate repairs on all accessibility
features, like ramps and lifts, to ensure the system is truly inclusive for everyone. - Increase Capacity: Add
more buses or metro trains during the busiest hours to reduce overcrowding and make travel more
comfortable. - Enhance Cleanliness: Put a stricter schedule in place for cleaning stations and buses to
improve the passenger experience and public health.
By taking these steps, our city can build on its strengths and create a transport system that is even more
sustainable, safe, and reliable for all its citizens.
