V. READING
1. Read the text about the endangered species and find the reasons for their
extinction, underline the main information.
The rhinoceros is one of the largest land animals. There are five species of
rhinoceroses. Two of them live in Africa and three in Asia. There are only 11000
rhinoceroses left in the world. Most species have little hair. Rhinoceroses have one or two
upright horns on the nose. They are killed for sport. They are hunted for their horns. Some
people think that they have magical powers. Their horn is also used in Asian medicine.
Sea turtles are found in the warm oceans of the world. They are the fastest- swimming
turtle. They are hunted for their shells and meat. They live in the sea but they breathe air and
lay eggs on the beach. The eggs are often damaged. Baby turtles are often eaten by other
animals.
Pandas are two kinds of animals that live in Asia. Giant pandas live in China. Red
pandas live in China, India, Nepal. They are recognized by their black and white coats but
when they are born, they don’t have any hair. Both kinds of pandas eat bamboo. Very few
pandas are left in the wild today. In China, people cut down bamboo forests for wood and to
clear land for farming. They are also killed for their coats.
The African elephant is the largest mammal on the earth. They are killed for their
ivory tusks. The tusks are sold on the illegal market. They are used for making jewellery.
The growing population of Africa makes it difficult for elephant herds to find the large areas
of land they need.
The tiger is the largest member of the cat family. People admire tigers for their
strength and beauty, but they also fear tigers because they have sometimes attacked people.
Wild tigers live only in Asia. Today, there are only a few wild tigers left in most countries.
People have killed many of them for their precious fur.
2. Name the animal and the reason for its extinction.
3. What can be done to protect nature? Are there any ways of solving these
problems?
VI. GROUP WORK

2. Look through the text and say 3 things that impressed you.
Text. Litter is a problem in cities.
1) Litter is garbage – like food, paper and cans – on the ground or in the street. Where
many people live together, litter is a problem. People don’t always put garbage in the
garbage can. It’s easier to drop a paper that to find a garbage can for it. But litter is
ugly. It makes the city look dirty and spoils the view.
2) The wind blows papers far away. Often they are difficult to catch. When they blow
against the fence, they stay there.
3) Litter is a health problem, too. Food and garbage bring animals, which sometimes
carry diseases.
4) Some people want to control litter. They never throw litter themselves, and
sometimes they work together in groups to clean up the city. In most places litter is
against the law. The law punishes people who throw garbage on the streets. They
usually pay a fine, and occasionally they go to jail.
5) Two famous sayings in the United States are: “Don’t be a litter bug!” and “Every
litter bit hurts!”.
2. Write questions to the given answers.
